I can't imagine your grandparents knew about that, or at least were happy with it.

Seriously Vector, I'm sorry, but the more you tell us about your parents, the more I keep coming back to the words "emotionally abusive".

They heard about it in the thank-you notes they got from me as soon as I was old enough to dictate.

What's a 5-year-old going to do with money, anyway?  I didn't want anything.  I hadn't had enough different sorts of food to have any favorites other than "brown rice and lentil stew," which was tops until I graduated from elementary school or so.  I spent my days playing with blocks, reading books, planning scientific experiments, getting dirty, and all those other things.  I didn't want to buy anything.  I just wanted a little money to put in my piggy bank and save, which I did manage to get when my grandparents sent me a couple coins to play with, or if I found something in the street.  Didn't spend that, either.

I have/had been quite psychologically damaged/distressed between the ages of 3 and 21.25 or so, but that was no fault of my parents.  They have done their very best by me and I love them very much.  Other factors were the main cause.

No, about 21.75.  I'm occasionally unhappy, but I wouldn't call myself fucked up anymore.  My birthday's the 26th of January.

I saved up my allowance and at a certain level of having saved it my parents chipped in and helped me buy an SNES, my first big purchase. That's generally the history of my allowances, I would save them up for something big, and buy that instead of lots of little things.

I don't think not allowing a kid an allowance is abusive.  Call me old fashioned, but the only money I made before I was 16 was from picking rock or baling hay for neighboring farms, and buying a pig, raising it, and selling it at the county fair auction.  At 16 I got a summer job landscaping.  At 16 I also got my first expense, my 1951 Studebaker.

Looking at the previous sentence I really do look incredibly old fashioned.

I'm pretty sure he was referring to the "taking money other people have given her" thing rather than the lack of an allowance.

I consider any money given to a child from family as an allowance

edit* almost all of my earned money went into savings too, which I used to start a landscaping business once i graduated high school.  The one thing I can remember buying is Diablo II, and running it past my parents first.

I've never had an allowance, but then again I wanted for little. I've never lacked money in my pocket...

I never wanted an allowance. The less money my parents have the less food they can afford. It's that simple.

Yea. I grew up destitute. We were lucky to lima beans and toast for dinner. It still affects me, I hate to spend money. I still have a closet full of clothes from when I was a teenager.

Except that this time, the higher taxes for the rich in France is something that's probably going to come one way or another. This has nothing to do with the rich trying to help their country, it's the rich trying to make it seem as if an inevitable, political decision was motivated by their kindness...
