It's not about insulting a group.  It's about referring to a group as an inherently bad, undesirable thing.

You mean people wouldn't bat an eye if someone tried to insult a straight, educated, white male like they insult gay people?

*snark* Dude, I go to school in downtown Cleveland, take trains, busses, and walk. Did it for four years straight, including through some very, very run down neighborhoods. Never heard this. Ever. It's true that people of any color can be racist, but do yourself a favor and don't pursue this....

I'll honestly give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you have nothing but the highest of motives here.

The difference is "Straight, white educated males," aren't typically forced under by (American) society. This is especially true in the U.S. which not being from that country, you might not fully understand. In Europe where you are, Gay people and women are much more equal than here.

Not only can't gay people marry in the U.S. as they can in Europe but being gay was a criminal offense that could put you in jail for years until 2003 here. You can still be fired from your job for being gay, or denied housing because you are gay. The landlord can tell you that is why they won't rent to you (or why they are evicting you) and there is crap all you can do about it in the United States. That is, unless you happen to live in both a.) A state that hasn't altered its constitution against gay people, b.) a local government/city that has an ordinance prohibiting such conduct. It can be a little better if you work for the government but even that's dicey.

It isn't the same here.

Both my high school and college are at least equally Asian and white.  Never heard anything of the sort.  I've tutored in the poorer parts (i.e. run-down trailer parks) of my hometown.  Similarly: nothing.

Berkeley also has a fairly high African American population.  3/4 of my roommates are people of color, some of mixed heritage; many of my neighbors are black.  Again... never heard anything like that.  I mostly hear my white roommate falling all over herself and insulting the half-Filipino dude by accident.

The worst I've ever heard was in my martial arts dojo, pretty much 100% Japanese male, in which the instructor called girls who moved too slowly lazy bitches and (one) white guy the Japanese equivalent of "idiot honky."

That's one teacher, though.

The strongest slur I am aware of for white males is "peckerwood".  It is not in extensive use as far as I can tell.  I believe that speaks volumes.

For the record, it's a given that white males have it significantly easier then anyone else and that was completely besides my point. My point was just, and I am repeating myself, that any group can and will be insulted/used as an insult at some point.

I pretty much hear only white people calling other white people "white trash," and that's to show that it's about class, rather than color.  You know.  Don't sully whiteness, and all that.

Here at least, Vector's right. And I have actually heard this in reference to "white trash", I swear, "Least they're not ******s."

Translation, the person doing the insulting is insulting the person for being poor and perhaps having some undesirable traits, who knows, but they are given some "credit" for "at least being white." Because it would somehow be worse if they weren't.

I grew up in a very racist rural area, where N-word jokes were told every day in my high school and often laughed at by the teachers.... Glad to be out of there.

I use the word hysterical.  I'm aware of its history as a word, but I wasn't always.  I continue to use the word because I don't care where it came from, and because we don't live in the 18th century, and because I use it as it is used in the modern world, as a gender-neutral synonym for crazy.  I have to ask if you would hold a word's origin against someone using it, especially one that old, especially since most people probably don't know that.

Seriously, yesterday I was talking to a chinese guy who was making fun of chinese people. But if I do it it's suddenly wrong and racist. In that same conversation a gay guy started cracking gay jokes. White guys never get to have any fun.

I disagree. I've come to like "imperfections". In people, in nature, everywhere. Definition of "imperfection" being (but not limited to): inhomogenous, broken symmetry, unexpected, faulty, chaos.
