An experiment
« on: June 03, 2011, 06:48:37 pm »

Hmm... I want to try a bit of an experiment here(two if you count "figure out how the polls on this forum work"). For SCIENCE reasons, I can't exactly tell you what I'm doing, so this'll be starting out a normal adventure. Except with a poll that might change at any time.

You are an adventurer in service of the queen of Tharia, the greatest kingdom in the land. Well, the greatest within reasonable traveling distance at least. Unfortunately, you're rather new at this, and so far your job description is essentially "glorified guard". That looks like it will be changing soon though, as you've just received clearance to explore an old ruin discovered deep underground by a coal mine. There's no record of the place, and most wouldn't dare enter without a bit more information... which is probably why you managed to get the job. instead of someone more experienced. Today's the day you set out on your first real adventure, so you'd better stock up, using what little gold you have. What to buy...?

A shotgun, obviously.

Failing that, get the best bow with at least a full quiver of arrows you can.

Failing THAT, get some better armor.  We can always club people to death with the sword if we have to.

While you have never heard of this strange device called a "shotgun" (sorry, not quite that advanced. Yet. Here.), you do get a VERY well made bow, specially treated wood with a hand-made grip, as well as about a hundred arrows in a leather quiver. Assuming there's actually room to shoot things from range in the ruins, this will be quite handy. supplies purchased, you pick up several days worth of food and set off for the ruin, a cheap horse provided by the queen's stables gets you there quickly, and you are soon at the entrance to the mine. The mine workers have a small village (a collection of huts really) just outside it, but they haven't so much as set foot into the ruins just yet.

Now, how to go about this...

Recruit them. Offer them glory and gold if they risk life and limb to travel to depths unknown!

Tell them you heard there was an endless fountain of booze in there, that would only appear to the greatest miner/explorer of all time.

Also, ask them if they could loan any equipment that could potentially aid you within.  Rope, medicine, weaponry, etc.

Your efforts at recruiting some lackeys... are not a total failure. A pair of men agree to come with you, one who looks almost too old to swing a pick, and the other, while looking plenty strong, also looks about as bright as the rocks he mines. You also manage to get some rope off the others, though it's hardly more than 10 feet.

Well, time to enter the dungeons you suppose. Taking what things you have gathered with you, you descend into the mine, soon reaching the gigantic cavern they accidently broke into, ruined towers of various materials stretching as far as the eye can see.

Make the young one go in front, while the old one guards the back.  Move cautiously, and take heed of the old one's advice when it is coherent, so long as he seems sane and, if he does not appear sane, take his advice during moments of lucidity.

The young one is a meatshield.

Give young one sword. Talk him up on hopes and dreams of glory and heroism. Send him significantly ahead of you, with instructions to mark which way he went at any turns. Follow in his wake. Any trouble he runs into will either A)die by his sword or B)Create enough noise in killing him that you can know where it is in advance to shoot it from around the corner.

Handing your sword to your younger companion, the three of you proceed into the ruins, cautiously wandering the cavern. The place is starting to look less like ruins through, and more like... some sort of monument. Towers rise around you on every side, each appearing to be composed of a single, solid material. Everything from stone, to glass, to iron or even gold. Some of these things could have you set for life if you could get them out of here. Your pondering is cut rather short though, as your attention is drawn back to the old man behind you by a sudden yell, and you turn to see the man surrounded by a trio of glowing lights, slowly spinning around him.

Try to join him in the center of the ring of lights.  If possible, remove him from the light ring while you yourself move in.  Avoid making threatening moves, for now, and try to question old man on his knowledge of these things.

Failing this, find something you can write on and take notes as the light things do whatever to the old man.

Also:  If there are pillars made of gold, you might be able to get a few pieces.  Gold isn't exactly hard.

You briefly consider shooting the terrified man. Then you realize that owuld be silly, and push him out of the circle of lights, looking around cautiously at the three orbs as they circle you. One of them turns bright blue, then zooms toward you to stop just inches from your face, sitting still there as the other two continued to circle you, their own colors changing to red and yellow.
