Bonus: there is no such thing as friendly fire. I instruct my no-skill crossbowdwarves to fire right into my melee mess, from behind or from the front. Enemies shackled with pain are much easier to take down.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

Yesterday the second goblin for my current fort appeared. I gave my crossbowsquad a kill order and a single shot later the goblin was dead. (Actually two shots, but the second one arrived just too late.) Doesn't sound very nerfed. :P

I just had an admittedly legendary marksdwarf one-shot a titan in the brain with a bone bolt, so I don't think they've been nerfed.  Might be incredibly random and/or dependent on skill however.

Had the same with a dragon.
I was like OMG! A Dragon!
Sent out my Squad: "Boom Headshot!" Done.
That was my first dragon kill :)

Check his traits: he might be superdwarvenly tough or basically unbreakable.  I had a dwarf lose a baby and an arm, drop into bed exhausted, get back up and kill 17 goblins holding axe and shield in the same hand. She was epic.

Lol, would love to see both shield and wep on same hand working in RL. :P

I just had my militia captain(copper helm and mail shirt) hit 8 or 9 times by a Goblin master bowman. Medical screen says he has "lost ability to stand" and lots of other nasty stuff but it doesnt stop him from partying around the clock or killing more Goblins during their annual sieges...

Happens at times, the poor recruit that stood next to him was hit only twice, in both legs, but bled out quick.

Hey, nothing can keep dorf from his/her beer and party.

Just a clarification: this guy was nowhere near superdwarvenly tough or anything. Matter of fact he was a peasant in my arrowcatcher squad of wrestlers.

After the battle, every part of his body was red, both lungs destroyed, lower spine broken.
His health screen said that he couldn't stand, couldn't grasp, couldn't breathe, had sensory and motor nerve damage, and heavy bleeding. Pretty much the worst of everything on the health screen.

Also, two of those arrows were jammed in his head.

Then he was just unlucky.

Clearly, he was blessed by Armok. I would consult with your local priest, but the best thing to do here would be to sacrifice a kitten and give the recruit an artefact weapon or armor piece.

What material were the bolts made of?

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

What material were the bolts made of?

Copper and silver. Crap materials, I realize, but assorted copper weapons still hew unarmored stuff to bits.

As for the sacrifices, that has been done. I got three masterwork statues of him fighting (getting pincushioned) surrounding his coffin in a 5x5 enclosure, created by the local legendary potter. The exceptional statues weren't worthy and were committed to the magma sea.

Silver is actually one of the best bolt materials (not sure about copper), I believe because of the greater mass.

Copper is decent as well. Remember, there is no such thing as overkill. There's only "OPEN FIRE!" and "I NEED TO RELOAD!"

Is it better than steel?

Force = Mass x Velocity.

Theoretically, because all bolts are fired at the same speed, regardless of type, a more massive(silver is heavier than steel) bolt will exert more force on the target which, on an unarmored target, would deal more damage.  I don't know if the same would be the case for an armored enemy, or if the silver would bounce off more often due to being more pliable.

When something isn't quite dorfy enough, just add magma.
