Yes, learn from history.  War is like Wrestling.

First, you talk smack about someone.  Then, they get pissed and strike at you.  Finally, you jump them with your peeps.

For a first/early game, go Castille. Flatten the Muslim nations in North Africa, make your way around to the Ottomans, then up through the hordes to cut off the other European nations from land access. After that, just conquer eastwards while colonising the Americas and into central Africa. If you can, take out the other colonising nations to make a WC easier.

If you zoom out far enough the ships will be replaced by flags. Just find your flag and you got your ships. (won't work if there is someone else in the same sea province though. For that you'll need the ledger). If your ships are nowhere to be found they probably got lost at sea.

Must be someone else in the same sea zone. I goofed it up soon after that anyway... Foreign invasions with no support is a bad idea, even when there are several other nations also with armies in the vicinity.

I had this little thing called 'school' ... followed by 'rugby game' ... Anyways, Austria it is! I haven't looked into western Europe yet, so let's do this. I'm thinking easy difficulty and low AI agressiveness, because that's the only way I can do any better than hold my own, even as England or Castille.

Stop getting into stupid wars then :P
The trick to win a war is usually to pick of weak stacks, siege when you have a chance to capture the province before the enemy returns and just generally make a run for it. And blow up ships by the dozen if you have the chance, most countries lack a proper fleet (as Vyangmar found out when I attacked them as Oman :) ). You need to control the battlefield and just wait till the enemy starts imploding due to war weariness or stability drops. Or fight small countries and flatten and annex them before anyone has a chance to object. Even if they have big allies, if those guys don't hate your guts, you can often do a quick annex and then buy off the big guys.

The way to win a war against larger, more powerful states, is to fight like Russia in the Napoleonic Wars. Scorched Earth Tactics, attrition based warfare. Make them suffer every second they sit in your territory. When you win a battle, you absolutely must follow the defeated army until it is destroyed. Do not stop until all armies are destroyed.

Ok, I loaded it up, played a year, who the hell am I to designate my enemy, and how do I follow my mission 'expand the empire's borders'? I really have no idea which direction I should move or really anything.

Anyway, I've sort of figured this whole 'war thing out'... As ENgland I'd taken 2 of the Irish nations before they had any allies and made another one my BFF. This left the last one which was allied with Scotland and guaranteed by Brittany. These two then brought in Burgundy and this set of Austria.

I crushed Connaught, annexing them, and called all my allies into the war. Milan went after Burgundy, Leinster tried to fight off Burgundy and I moved 2 10 regiment armies into southern Scotland, keeping another of the same size back to fight off any Scottish invasions.

I sieged their two border provinces to the brink of capturing them and then I was offered a white peace, which seemed like a deal as Burgundy was just starting to bring their full weight into the conflict. Burgundy sieged Leinster and captured it, as I was planning to take it from the Burgundians after they annexed it and fulfill my mission, getting me some cores.

What are the odds that I can buy Leinster off them?

You're Austria, your friends and allies ought be obvious. The whole of the Holy Roman Empire is your friend, your enemies are France, and the Ottoman Empire. Align yourself with Hungary, form dynastic ties if you don't already have them, and try to form a personal union with Hungary. The Ottoman Empire is destined to rule the east, and your job is to contain them over the long term. You need to think in the long term, not short term. Short term gains can easily be long term liabilities, and shot term liabilities can be long term gains.

Your job is to become and remain the Holy Roman Emperor. Keep relations in the German states high. As Emperor, your job is to maintain the status quo in the empire, do not let member states lose territory or be annexed.

Your mission, expand the borders of the Empire, means to use diplomacy to ask non member states to join the empire, or annex non-member territory and use a provincial decision to add it to the Empire.

As you gain authority as Emperor, you must start proposing reforms to Imperial government to centralize administration, and eventually unify the realm under your enlightened rule.

This will most likely not happen fast. Defend the Empire. Develop your country, forge dynastic ties across the empire, especially with Hungary and Bohemia.
