There would be some use for a subsonic gauss gun; it could likely be quieter than a subsonic silenced gun.

That sounds like a mortar, except using magnets to launch instead of an explosive charge.  I wonder if that's actually at all practically...  But I think the launcher would have to be too large to be man-portable.  It'd particularly need to be quite tall, and have a powerful power supply.

Maaaaybe truck-portable?  Or a dedicated artillery vehicle?  Kinda want to ask the xkcd guy about this sort of thing sometime.

Maybe a walking tank can haul it? ;)

Make a giant railgun that fires an oversized cartoon anvil in an arc, landing on tanks and squishing them.

Still technically silenced.

You misspelled seance.  Are possessing Draignean?  Are you actually a ghost in the shell? You have to tell us if you are, that's the rule

That's actually a good point, you could use a gauss mortar and, while the enemy would notice the explosion, they wouldn't be able to hear where it was fired from.

And if you use a powerful enough explosive, it's essentially perfectly stealthy!
If a shell explodes in an outpost and there are no survivors, does it make a sound?

Well, hopefully.  Otherwise it probably got the user as well.

Really, why doesn't Snake just drop stealth mininukes from his chopper.

Clearly the Virtuous Mission has left Snake with averse to using nukes from helicopters.  He doesn't want to pull a Volgin.

consider that nobody seems to have blamed Volgin for the nuking

that means it was actually

a goddamn stealth mission

It was more a political convenience for the Russians to claim it was the US so they could make them deal with Volgin without pissing off all the various factions :P

Ummm. Gauss weapons and rail guns are two entirely different things. Magnetism isn't quite the same principle as electrical arcing (or not arcing, but making a complete dynamic circuit) for propulsion. Mostly. Sort of.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railgun

Rail guns almost always make lots of sound. It's hard (but not impossible) to make them silent and still be useful. It's pretty easy with gauss weapons.

So am I the only one who seems to find the music somewhat, well, un-MGS-like in Phantom Pain?

I mean, it's not entirely bad, but still.

Gauss is a term that refers to both coilguns and railguns.

So I've just finished Chapter 1.
Wow, nice subtle allusions to the book 1984, Kojima.

Gauss is a term that refers to both coilguns and railguns.

Only if used mistakenly. Gauss means coilgun. It's a different magnetically-accelerated weapon design from the railgun.
