Well I guess to say that Metal Gear Solid's story is convoluted is kind of not the whole story.

Individually the games are easy to follow along and anything they want you to remember from the previous game they will let you know. It is only when you take the entire series as a whole that it becomes a game of invisible chess where everyone is trying to manipulate everyone else by doing moves none of the other people can see.
