Note of frustration: it is very annoying when I have to run around like a chicken with its head cut off after being found (my fault) because I can't find a good hiding spot (also my fault) and a ten-minute infiltration becomes a twenty-minute firefight.

So as usual I didn't get much time to play today and made almost no progress aside from kidnapping some men. I have a couple questions for people further along. When I developed a base platform it seemed to automatically position it way the hell away from the main platform. Is this intentional? You can't choose where to put it yourself?

There are more platforms for each.  Non-placeable as far as I know.  (Episode 12-ish)

As someone who played a lot of mgs games, I would have appriciated a way to speed up the starting tuorial, but it was nice story telling anyway.

I agree with both. I.e. it's annoying to wait for the real game to start, but it establish that Cipher(?) is evil and bad, - even compared to a rouge private militia abducting innocent family fathers (= conscripted USSR soldiers).
It should perhaps been a flashback set as mission 2? I.e. you are presented with a changed snake and think WTF??, and are then motivated to get the history on how he got there.

The prologue is like a fever dream and only partly because Alma from FEAR and the Second Horseman of the Apocalypse attack you.  I'm really glad I played Ground Zeroes or I'd be completely fucking lost at this point.

I do like the openness of it.  It's still too early to see just how it works considering it's also mission- and episode-based, but just being able to move through a non-linear natural environment and decide how I want to do a mission makes the stealth experience so much more interesting than something like Splinter Cell.

Just to confirm, are the black things sticking out of snake's head the shrapnel they couldn't extract or is that something else?

They are shrapnel that can't be removed. I think the doctor said so while showing Xrays, where he said there had been more than 100 foreign bodies embedded in Snake, - including tooth and bone pieces.
... so based on the established 'personality trasfer through limb grafting'-logic, I wonder if Snake will be able to access Paz's memory.  :D

Huh, apparently FOB stuff is unlocked way late in the game/story progression.  (Granted I have spent a lot of time just totally dismantling bases/fortifications I cross paths with, in search of non-existent prisoners and loot.)
Seriously, the dog is the most awesome partner if you want to go stealth.  And Cargo++ ... everything is mine.

Also, either my connection sucks or Online mode lags my iDroid like hell.  (I've also been pretty much stuck in Offline mode except for that one time I managed to port over the Ground Zeroes data, then it didn't work at all afterwards.)

Fun Tip: Don't land the choppa right next to an APC.  On the other hand, they won't notice you were there if you don't man the gatling...

EDIT: Have over 500 people in base, over 150 in waiting.  15 casualties so far.

Venom Snake is Chico confirmed.

If you get more staff than you have room for do the extras go to the waiting room? I'm quickly reaching the cap in my measly little base and I still need more minor metals to upgrade the command platform.

I have not reached a waiting room cap, yet.  I'll report it when it does happen.  Have over 250 in waiting room at this moment though.
Fake Edit: Hit limit: 700 intotal or 278 waiting room, it'll automatically dismiss people on its own apparently.  (I have another building under construction now... will see if that brings limit up or not.)

EDIT: Bastards destroyed my unattended ride, was right in middle of road.
EDIT2: Heard there were short soldiers in a mission.  Obviously, I went to greet em.  Much disappointment to be had.

Another question. Do destroyed comms equipment and AA Radar repair themselves after you got back to MB? I feel a bit like I'm wasting my time going after them.
That said I'm having fun just not doing missions and kidnapping people. Played one mission today then spent the rest of it just screwing around in free roam. I think I'm getting the hang of stealth a bit more, especially now I know that if you tell soldiers to lie down they won't get back up themselves, so don't have to worry about them waking up and alerting anyone etc.

I also get this weird glitch in customization. When I try to change the 'word' parts I can choose letters and numbers fine, but trying to go to the other tabs makes the game lag like hell, and trying to scroll up and down the list takes about 5 seconds each time I want to scroll.

EDIT: Just found the 'Take On Me' tape. Woooo

I read somewhere that if you take a big one then you're easier to spot...? I don't know if that includes sniper rifles or if it's just missile launchers

There are rooms in Mother Base that become accessible.  Stop whatever you're doing ingame and go directly to the medical platform.  There is a door with a blue light above it on the top floor (not the roof).  Only Kojima could resist the urge to have the same point you there.

I've finished Afghanistan and, just, holy shit. I'm at around 15 hours and this game still hasn't hit the bottom of its concept, much less its content. Just, fuck.

Oh yeah, and somebody died from illness. But who was it, you ask? Was it any of my innumerable hordes of E-trash or D-jects? The sad but tolerable departure of a C-student or B-zzzzzzzzz? No, it was none other than Burning Buzzard, my A+ specialist and single-handed leader of Combat Team.

I swear to god I will sink the medical struts into the sea, do your jobs and give people that actually matter penicillin.

Kojima doesn't hate love us that much. For example, even though

both say they dampen footsteps, you (the player) can still hear them. Enemies can't, I noticed, so it must go the same with that four-foot rocket launcher slamming back and forth on your back. It's just about posture and movement, I guess.

Spoilered that in case you don't want to know about a certain outfut in the game...
