Here's something that doesn't involve dumping sand bags:

Drop chute. Build a 1x1 stockpile for sand bags on top of a hatch that's attached to a pressure plate or three in the doorway to the room with the hatch. When dwarves fill the stockpile they hit the pressure plates when leaving and the bags drop down to the lowest level. The hatch then closes and someone tries to fill the stockpile again with a sandbag.

Edit: If you're using one of the latest versions there is soil in all the caverns, which may or may not be sand. Although there was one map I had in an earlier version (genned in 0.31.20-21 I think) that had one cavern covered in mud and the others covered in soil. And moss doesn't grow on mud, though trees and shrubs do. That brings us to... does chopping down a tree produce soil in that tile?

Given current events, I've altered my profile pic and I'm sorry it took so long to fix. If you find the old one on any of my accounts elsewhere on the internet, let me know by message (along with the specific site) and I'll fix. Can't link the revised avatar for some reason.

Are you certain you can define a stockpile atop a building?

You cannot, unfortunately. That's an otherwise ingenious solution.

Dwarfy way: Build a stockpile of sandbags on a platform suspended above the pit, then destroy the supports. See how many bags reach the bottom of the pit!

2: The sandbag stays intact and possibly kills someone.
So in other words, no bad things can happen with #2.

by Pneumatic tube I meant flushing it down a waterfall onto a grate. Might have the same problems as tossing it.

Actually, that's not a bad idea...  Have it flush water down and over a grate, and into the magma sea.  Spam cave-in, all obsidian falls into the sea and disappears, and solid material is left atop the grate.  Or push it up a level or two, and have the water drain out through fortifications carved on the map's edge.  A good outlet for your plumbing system too!

It's what I use to transport goods across long distances without a billion dwarf trips. It's part of the reason I love aquifers.

Hydraulic is the word you're looking for.

In any case, can it be made to work automated or does it require supervision?

You could have a water reactor.

If you're properly creative, any number of things can be automated.  One fantastic ideas of mine is to place a sandbag stockpile in a room.  One end of this room is a pit.  On the other side, the adjacent room is a tall water reservoir.  At the TOP of this reservoir (built on a small floor tile overhanging the interior) is a pressure plate set to activate on 7/7 water.  This plate is linked to the doors/floodgates at the bottom.  Thus, it will fill up slowly, preferably catching the run-off of your mist generators, and once it fills to the top it will open itself up, allowing the water to flow into the sandbag area and push it all down the pit and down to the magma forges.  For OSHA purposes you can build grates over the pit area.  For DWARF purpose, you could not.  It's not the fasted method, but it's automated and runs off waste water that doesn't have to flow very quickly.

I'm planning a similar but thoroughly more complicated setup for my drowning trap for this fort.  When activated, water will flow into a series of tubes that are linked together.  One tube may only activate after the one in front of it has.  Thus, it will drop chunks of water in sequence, with the closest outlets opening, then the next out, then the next.  No, the goblins and elves won't appreciate this planning and orchestration, but that's beside the point.

Hydropower, actually. Hydraulic would imply that the liquid in use is under pressure, while pneumatic is for pressurized air.

I may have to play with this water-push-tube idea myself. Sound like an excellent way to clear out areas of stone.

I stand corrected.

And you can try catapults for that, easier setup and free stat training for all the idlers.
