Two-Stage Hydro Conveyor Design.

Level Top:
Code: [Select]

===== - sand bags stockpile
BBBBB
BBBBB - retracting bridge over pit
BBBBB
FFFFF - fortifications
Bottom level is just he bottom of the pit

First bags are stored at stock pile.
Then you drop there some water flow, which pushes bags on the bridge.
When you're done with water, you restract bridge. Bags are falling down the pit and being collected.
Repeat.

Did you know that the Russian word for "sock" is "no sock"?
I just saw a guy with two broken legs push a minecart with a corpse in it. Yeah.

Flowing water won't work - a bunch of the sand bags will get pushed into an alternate dimension.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Attempting to designate-dump (d-b-d) will cause the sand to be dumped from the bags, because designate-dump applies the dump command to the contents of the containers. In order to dump a container and keep the contents inside the container, you have to loo'k' at the item in question and press 'd'ump on every container item. The container will then be dumped and keep its contents.

You can check this by examining the items inside of the container. If you designate-dump, the items inside will also be designated for dumping. If you loo'k' dump, the items will not be designated for dumping. This is also how you can dump specific items from containers if for some reason you really want to micromanage the container contents.

[The same also applies for forbid/claim, melting, and hiding objects.]

In the end I created 6 glass furnaces with the only goal of hauling sand downstairs. Worked quite well.

Naked dwarves remove the need to produce more clothing, which means more of your pig tails can be brewed into booze.
I think this is less a problem and more an expression of dwarven priorities.
