Agreed; dragons are Weaky McWeaksauce.  I caught a dragon, modded the raws to let me tame and train it, then set it out on the front porch waiting for the next ambush/siege.

A crossbow goblin killed it with a single headshot.
A crossbow goblin killed it with a single headshot.
A crossbow goblin

Now THERE is a frightening adversary.  The last elite marksgoblin that came to visit got more kills than the last five FBs combined.

DF dragons:  Less Smaug, more H.R. Pufnstuf.

Well, if you think about it, Smaug did get one-shot by a marksman.

The dragon fire breath is extremely dangerous.  But not all of them breath fire, and there's that whole lack of armor even approaching copper/bronze levels with their scales.

(Had my first fire breather, it created a huge brush fire outside my fort and killed a lot of civies before I could put it down.)

All it took was 3 legendary Axe dwarfs with their trusty adamantium battle axes! The dragon didn't stand a chance :D Paws and guts were flying all around!
The first guy to get there got stunned (and I think the dragon did as well), but as soon as the axes started flying... GG dragon :D
Excellent!  Now dig into the caverns and find two flying slime Forgotten Beasts at once and see how well you do.
Can't you simply punch their arms off? I thought slime was liquid  :-\
It would make sense, unless the slime is really, really sticky and/or acidic. Or bouncy. I can see it now...
"The Forgotten Beast Flubber has arrived! It is made entirely of slime."
"Oh, shouldn't be to hard to take care of. Axedwarf! Charge it!"
*The Axedwarf hacks the Flubber in the body, but the attack is deflected! The adamantium battle axe strikes the legendary axedwarf in the head, jamming the skill through the brain and tearing appart the brain!*
"Holy ****!"
Actually, unless the axe hit the dwarf sharp side first, it would be useless as a weapon.

Dragons are a pushover. :(

My last dragon attack was taken care of with just a single volley of iron bolts. It didn't stand a chance.
See, now, that's a problem with crossbows.

(Had my first fire breather, it created a huge brush fire outside my fort and killed a lot of civies before I could put it down.)
...How?

Pretty sure it bled to death on some weapon traps.  My military had been ravaged by a previous goblin siege led by a demon.  (I killed the demon, but lost 12/15 of my melee dwarves and a few crossbow dwarves.  The dragon showed up in the middle of clean-up.  It almost resulted in a tantrum spiral.)

And this is why I modded all my megabeasts to have bronze scales and bones.

I had an above ground garden built in the grounds of my castle and two young dwarves spent time socialising there over the summer and at the end of the summer they were in love. Remember those long summers of your childhood? That first kiss in the gardens while crossbows dwarves shoot goblins above your head? The rain of dead birds as the hunters get to work? Truly Spearhills is a paradise.

The current issue with dragons is that their scales hardly provide protection so they are effectively just as squishy and easy to hurt as an unarmored dwarf.

I've often thought that giving dragons castes, with different material types, would be a good idea.  Bronze Dragons, Iron Dragons, Steel Dragons... even the fabled (and deadly) Bluestuff Dragon.  Aaaah that would be Fun.

Definitely don't let it breathe fire on a depot full of traders and trade goods.  There's nothing like watching your !!Dwarves!! setting the booze stockpile on fire when they get thirsty.

Crossbow goblins are deadly, alright...

So many "The Blob" scenes are popping in my head now.

Beware of the Blob it creeps, and reaps, and writhes and slides across the floor, right through the door and all around the walls, a splotch, a blotch BE CAREFUL OF THE BLOB *pop*

Nice one, not sure when I'll be feeling like killing a baby but these things are good to know.
This is why we can't have nice things... someone will just wind up filling it with corpses.

You can always add the Forgotten Beasts' TRAPAVOID tag to dragons to get them out of cage traps...

You should also remember that your common dragon is most likely a dragon child, only grown to a fraction of adult size.
Description does not say it, but it may be ho bigger than a cow or a giant cheetah (they get to 500kilograms in .25)
Still, what danger does the giant cheetah pose to your military? it's just a snack for them. The only real danger is fire which will start if you allow them to make three of five blasts. The dragonfire blast attack itself is easily blockable, but burning grass and bushes around are not.

EDIT: and they can't fly.
