More like I'm unlucky... and running a 4-5 year old laptop wit' ye' olde shite integrated video card, heh. It does alright, usually, but a lot of stuff only borderline runs. Having to use Steam is probably going to mean falling back to the old playing-without-explorer-running standby, which got old about three computer ago.
Now see, I understand that. That's a legitimate problem, albeit one that doesn't seem too common. I used Steam on my older PC just last year, and most of the PC was around 4-5 years old. I actually used it even with non-steam games, and never really had problems. They should give you an option for running the game without the platform, but I just assume it's something to do with preventing multiple people from using a single copy of a game.

I like to think Terraria will be reasonably low on memory/cpu usage, but that's just wishful thinking with no evidence to support or oppose it.

Unless their physics modelling is far more capable than what we've seen in the LPs, or just plain coded poorly, it may require a hefty CPU, but I doubt it. RAM may be an issue, but probably not. Someone did some estimations earlier in the thread and guessed somewhere around 500-600MB of RAM for a large world, which isn't bad at all.

Well the code that we have seen wasn't that well done at all. As a general rule, if your NPC class and your Player class don't extend the same abstract class, you don't have very good code. However, it is firmly plugged into the .net framework, and using xna for anything possible, including graphics and sound, so by using some already very optimised code, rather then some more scrappy home brew, that should help.

My experience has been, if Steam pushes your rig over the edge it's time for a new computer, not for games to avoid Steam. I totally appreciate running a PC into the dirt, but you're already on the fringe of gaming. There's no reason they should factor that in when they choose who to go with. There is a reasonable cut off point after which devs shouldn't be expected to support lower end hardware. If that marker is Steam, well, progress can be a bitch.

There are videos on their website if that's what you mean by sneak peek.

Did they say they're only going to release it on Steam?

Which is the general opinion I see on the topic, yeah, and it's a fair and accurate position to have. It'd be nice if 'time for a new computer' was really an option at the moment :-\

It doesn't seem to me that an 'off-while-playing option' for Steam would be inhibiting progress, though. Or why something more than Steam rather than instead Steam would be, yanno', some terrible progress-inhibiting sacrifice (though I'm playing that up a bit, of course :P). I have trouble seeing it as a binary 'either Steam or not Steam' thing. Both Steam and something else would be nice, is all. Th'devs prerogative, of course, and it's not going to stop me from getting (legitimately, even!) the game. It'd just be nice if the choice was there.

I haven't noticed any media with the new sprites, m'self, but I haven't really been paying terrible much attention since the release month was mentioned. Maybe in the more recent Pbat LPs, I'unno.

And yeah, Flare, Steam only for, at least, the initial release.

The very first re-spriting pass can be seen in PBat's videos. They've done a lot more sprite work since then, but it's going to have to wait for the Official Trailer v2.0.

And on an unrelated note, everytime I look at the title of this thread now I think "Terraria: Looks like Minecraft, tastes like chicken."

Still using FFV graphics? I like them, but... I feel a little cheated that they are ripping something from a game I love so for their own profit. I guess I don't object, but I would prefer if Terraria got it's own soul rather then borrowing from others.

PBat's version was probably outdated by the time he got it :P

The developers have said that they've completely replaced the old sprites, in that IRC Q&A that was posted.

If another option was provided that wasn't more oppressive (SecuROM for example) that was viable for me, I'd leap at the opportunity. As is, I'll deal with the pest that I'm finding Steam to be.

SecuROM is LESS oppressive? Steam doesn't have an activation limit, and many games that are on Steam don't actually require Steam to be running in the first place.

*cough* SecuROM's an example of something more oppressive. At least I hope that was what was being said. SecuROM's one of those things you buy the game and 'bypass', to use an appropriate euphemism, in response to.
