I wonder if it'll be possible to extract Terraria from the Steam GCF and at least run single player without using Steam...

Multiplayer.

No chance of multiplayer with hacked version.

(got ninjad here, but I'm leaving it) It MIGHT be difficult to join in on multiplayer too, depending on how they do it. It sounds like it's just going to be straight IP addresses, so it probably won't be an issue, but I guess there might be issues if it's more integrated with Steam. The Steam-only release is another aspect that has me saying "oh that's a bit unfortunate, but understandable for now." I think they'd be stupid to not eventually roll out other releases (and a mac release even if it's a difficult thing to do), especially if their goal of "years of actively updating" comes true.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Yeah, I'm not saying it'd be easier, just that it could be done if you were dedicated enough. A lot of your points weren't intentional decisions on Notch's part to allow modding, though. Heck, a while back Notch was specifically against people doing exactly that, though he seems to have somewhat changed his mind recently. The differences you noted come from differences in the languages used to program the game and, possibly, Notch being a better coder than Red.

Still, though, I see your point.

Speaking of, a friend of mine wants to play but refuses to get Steam, saying that she'd rather wait the however-many-days until the game is hacked/leaked/work-around'd to be played without it.

Any idea if this is at all possible, or how soon it would happen?

I'm not in any way supporting her choice. Not just because it's generally immoral, but also because it means she'll miss out on our little group's initial experiences with the game. I mean, as soon as it's released, I know it's going to be at the very least a solid week of late-night Terraria-playing.

Who knows how long she'll be "waiting" to actually join.

She says,
"You know, New Vegas is primarily sold and accessed via Steam. Didn't stop me, why should it now."

But then Fallout: New Vegas is a pretty big name game, and it's not multiplayer either.

I'd really like to have her stop being stupid about this. She already knows I intend to buy her copy, so it's not money, she just doesn't want to have/use Steam, period. She has before, and hated it.

Any ideas as to what I could say to dispel her stubbornness? :(
It's actually not a good idea to discuss pirating/cracking. Also it usually takes from one to five days for it to happen.

I rarely buy single-player games (almost never), mostly due to the lack of time and many good games which I still enjoy. Also, $ reasons. However multiplayer games I buy, because it's fun to play them with friends (or through Hamachi :P).

Discussing isn't a problem. Posting links and then extensively talking about it, is. :P

As for the time frame... Can be anything between -30 to 1 days of waiting. Rarely anything above one day of waiting.

Patches will be an issue. I'm not too hesitant to start using Steam on my main computer. That has RAM to spare. It's my laptop I worry about. ION2 is nice but it's no miracle worker. I'd like to be able to carry my worlds over for some single player on the run.

MP paranoia for pirates is founded and unfounded. It's an easy way to get a key blacklisted if it wasn't already.

I don't really see the Terraria devs instituting some key-authenticating when you get on to a server though. That's where so many MP snafus start. Steam will be validating keys on install, but I doubt it goes much farther than that.

Having to run Steam, offline or online, to play the game? That's farther than I really want to go.

I really don't understand this aversion to Steam. It doesn't use enough resources to impact gameplay in any significant way. In fact, it uses less resources than Firefox, and a lot of people alt-tab in games to look up information online anyway. The social aspect is completely optional, you don't need to add friends much less communicate with them. You can set it so it doesn't open during system start-up, which pretty much every reasonable application can do anyway. Even the auto-updates for games can be turned off.

And you also have to pay for games to play them via Steam :P. I guess that's the main reason many people dislike it, hehe.

Or, yanno', legitimate software/hardware conflicts. Steam doesn't run flawlessly on all computers. It's why I'd really like it if there were some other options :-\ Though I guess it is accurate that it's a niche problem that most folks don't have. Still...

It can also tip the scales for older computers, from ' just barely able to run' a game to 'not able at all'. I honestly wouldn't mind steam if I could turn it off after starting the game up, or something along those lines, but having to keep it running can cause issues that would otherwise be avoidable.

It's not going to stop me from getting Terraria, but if there were another option, I'd definitely be planning on using that instead.

Well, my PC is quite old (I think it's 3 or 4 years, and it was not up-to-date back then), and no problems for me. I guess I am just lucky.

More like I'm unlucky... and running a 4-5 year old laptop wit' ye' olde shite integrated video card, heh. It does alright, usually, but a lot of stuff only borderline runs. Having to use Steam is probably going to mean falling back to the old playing-without-explorer-running standby, which got old about three computers ago.

Mostly it just gets somewhat annoying to constantly see the "you don't like Steam, so must be a pirate" line. There's plenty of other reasons to not be exactly enthusiastic about the service beyond a taste for larceny, after all.

Doesn't mean Steam's bad, exactly. It definitely seems to be about the best of a bad lot :P
