As it stands now, Terraria is starting to strike me as the kind of game you love intensely for a few incredibly long play sessions...and then you hit the peak. Like, you make your fort, you kill the bosses, you build the best loot and....another play through amounts to doing the exact same thing.

Not that that's bad. But I dunno if the game will have the randomness and variety that you might get out of say, DF or a rogue-like. While I'm still really pumped for the game, some multiplayer withstanding, I think it's going to be a game I binge on for a good long while, then struggle to find a reason to come back to it. Maybe, maybe not. They may do things in development where you can't see everything, get everything and do everything in one game, with more biomes, items, bosses and areas that aren't all present at once. Games like that keep me coming back time and again, especially single player.

Put another way, I wonder if Terraria will end up somewhat like Magicka where it's a blast until the very end, but then you're pretty much "done." I'm still a guaranteed sale (Shut up and take my money already guys), but I wonder on average how long it takes to "complete" a full game. There really isn't quite enough going on in terms of the world or the NPCs to really create persistence. The corruption is a nice start, but there needs to be more.

And in a totally unrelated line of thought, what's the plan for gems I wonder? Redigit and Blue treat them as purely ornamental, but they gotta have some more planned for them than that. I wonder if you'll be able to set gems in either furniture or gear.

From what I seen outside of the highlights reel the game moves very, very, slowly.

I can't wait to see what we do if we play multiplayer ( Warning I will die 90000 times in 30 mins. It takes me forever to get use to games )

Part of it is how much they arn't very good at it.

Another is how most of their solutions is to spam the attack button causing them to often bash enemies right back into them

Lastly it is a combination of both the gooey crazy controls and the fact that the game likes to throw inconveniances at you all the time which will kill you if you do not do so (meaning the game plagues on your patience). Frankly creating non-stop torches just to see every few steps (because otherwise you cannot see... and no you cannot hold it in your other hand) sounds rather bad, so you NEED the miner helmet.

THEN it is that if you get hit it makes you fly and get hit by everyone else

Most games with resource collecting and brick-by-brick construction are slow.

There's an accessory later game that is basically a miniature sun that follows you around. So you don't necessarily "need" a mining helmet.

Lots of the tedium seen in the SP I think is supposed to be alleviated by other players. One makes light, one keeps the guys off, yadda yadda. Pbat's LP makes the point that playing alone, there are a lot of things you have to do by yourself to play right, and it takes time.

The standard "You don't start playing until you walk around the world and collect the things that need collecting so you can collect the other things so you can actually play the game correctly" fanfare for collection games.

Pbat seems to think torches stop monsters from spawning. If that's true, torches may be necessary no matter what.

Thing is, you can. You don't NEED a miner's helmet for mining and spelunking, you just need torches and a good feel for hotkeys. You don't actually need a grappling hook or rocket boots for navigating caves either, mere wood platforms will suffice. You don't need special materials and/or special equipment unless you want to access more special materials and/or equipment (demonite pick for corrupted stone, for instance). You can very well play the game without walking around the world and collecting extra stuff.

God its insanely fustrateing that Pbat cant figure out he needs 1room/npc [and each room needs a table+chair+walls+door to be a room] and that the guide COUNTS as a npc. Concidering it was in the dev lp very early, and the guide npc mentions it, while pbat is playing.. its just.. so... fustrating.

EDIT: he figured it out in episode 11.

Sure just like in Monster Hunter you don't need any upgraded objects to start fighting the larger monsters. SURE it will be incredibly tough and tedius, but it is possible.

Or heck Splunky. You don't need ANY objects, girls, or tunnels to beat the game either. Heck you don't have to use flares or Bombs.
