Terraria... Looks like Minecraft + Metroid?
« on: April 23, 2011, 03:46:32 pm »

Trailer

Is it just me, or does this look really freakin' awesome?

For those who can't/don't want to watch the vid: Think 2D side-scrolling Minecraft (complete with some kind of multilayer) with Metroid-like platforming and, if i'm seeing right, items/upgrades.

The main site is rather barren, but from the vid it looks pretty polished...

EDIT: Devs have posted an LP, didn't see it at first.

Reminds me a great deal of Clonk but with better character controls. That I can dig.

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

Looks really cool, some of the items are pretty crazy and some of the enemies have a almost DFlike feel to them.

This looks great! Like Clonk mixed with Minecraft mixed with Spelunky.

It looks like Clonk in many ways, both good and bad.

I'm digging the massive 2D platforming exploration with many fun tools, but the graphics are very Clonk-like in that they are incredibly sloppy. They have some good sprites but fuck if you can tell what's happening when several things are going on at once.

I'll play it, but I'll try my damn best to mod the graphics.

Watching the LPs, the crafting interface seems to be alot better than Minecraft, but I can see it getting annoying scrolling through it if you don't know what you're looking for.

I'm definitely interested to see where this game goes. Can't wait for an open alpha / beta.

I don't think the sprite work is that sloppy. It's just busy, like Metal Slug ect...

This looks like a lot of fun, on the order of that mouse game we were all dicking around with a few months ago. I like that there seems to be a ton of stuff in game as far as items and constructables goes.

Looks pretty cool, especially from the LP they're doing. It kind of sounds like it escalates/progresses better than the other free-roaming open world kinds of games I'm associating it with.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

The graphics are a little cheesy, but the functionality is very impressive.  And at least they're consistent.

The more "indie" developers there are and the more they copy each other's ideas, the more the gaming world as a whole seems to approach my Ideal Game: the analogue combination of Minecraft, Worms, and Cortex Command that's been floating around in my head since I was nine years old.  It's a goddamn shame I never learned how to program.
