Any tips for companions in Elona+?

So far I've managed to get not a single use out of mine aside from eating up my gp.

Get 2-3 silver bells and give them ranged weapons. They have 678 speed so they can attack 5-6 times after your every move. Their healing is incredible too. Just poison them and throw a level 3 or higher ball at them to catch them.

BTW, for raising the house ranks just steal treasure machines from Palmia. They are difficult to steal and you might have to savescum a lot but that's how I managed to get to the 1st house rank. I guess it needs at least 10 machines to reach 1st from zero if you own a castle.

I think I'm still gonna wait for a while before switching to Elona+

Bells got even more OP versions in Elona+.

I learned to never carry around Caramels of Termination, Hungry sea lions can loot them (Despite me having over 12 different stacks of food).

I stock up on spells before the etherwind, then spend the entire first week of that month casting the crap out of everything on a sandbagged bear.

I'm attempting to play this again through wine, but the fonts look like absolute ass.  Anyone know how to fix this?  I can barely read this shit at all.

Not enough spellbooks, obviously.
But yeah, I typically make trips to the mage guild every month or so, where I've got plenty of the good stuff on reserve. Typically I spend a good 30k or so each trip, though mostly for the expensive stuff. I spend a lot more than that on the magic vendors in Palmia (my base of operations; I've got my house 1 tile north of the city, and my museum and farm right next to Yowynn) and Lumiest. GP stopped being an issue ages ago. I get 10k from rods from my farm every couple weeks (yay, level 54 gardening), 18k from income, and a bunch more from frequent level 15+ dungeon runs. Each of those dungeon runs gives around 20k or more, and are rather easy when your magic missile can one-shot all but rare mobs.

I've also been starting in on ice ball lately, which is now around level 36 or so. It now does 10d44 or thereabouts in a surround. Quite a handy room clearer for lower level dungeons. Friendly fire is an issue, as I got control magic rather late, but the little girl can typically survive about 4 times longer than the mobs anyway.

The other thing I've noticed is this spell grinding really inflates my level. Which isn't bad at all, since the game scales based on fame... but your MP bar scales based on level. I'm currently level 38, but there is no way in hell I could take on a level 38 dungeon, simply because my defense isn't good enough and my only mildly useful pet is mostly useful for dying, since it's around level 25 and melee oriented.

As for the text, it's due to being self-aware about my habit of not finishing my post until well after I posted it.

But yeah, my companions are generally a mix of people and putits, depending on the circumstances.

Also, to whoever is playing in wine, it appears you're in japanese-language mode. Elona may not be reading the config file, you should have had the chance to specify japanese or english at the start of the game.

Go into the config file and set language to the correct value-the comments on the right should specify what that value is.

The game, when first loaded, should ask you which language you want (Japanese/English).

Spellcasting seems to tremendously increase the exp. I usually get some cursed gear that decreases the exp and I wear them whenever I get close to levelling up. Potions of descent lower your level by one but it's incredibly rare. I managed to find a potion of descent only once and it was in a magic shop. People say zombies drop them and I started running a zombie ranch because of that but none of the zombies I killed dropped any potions.

Out of all the dungeons I've run, I've seen a zombie drop a descent pot twice. Let me echo they are incredibly rare.

The drop rate for Potions of Descent from Zombies is not high enough to make Zombie Ranches viable. I had 10 Zombie Ranches running at the same time, and got 1 Potion of Descent from them.

I literally got more Potions of Descent from low level magic shops than from Zombie Ranches.

The Japanese isn't the problem, it's the terrible font rendering I'm having trouble with.
