Raise your rank, arena fighting and pet arena.
Also, get some nicer furniture for your house.

Don't forget to keep your fame low! Since you mentioned pet arena, you reminded me. The best way to lower fame, bar none, is to hit escape once a pet arena fight starts and forfeit. It's completely spammable, with no penalty.

If you have the ability to steal you can nick windows from town.
Otherwise, quest rewards.

Do some mining and drop all the diamond ores in your house. They're worth a surprising amount of house rank, and they don't sell for all that much anyway.

North of Palmia is an embassy. Straight ahead when you enter is the tax box.

Not sure about mining though, wouldn'ty mind knowing m'self.

Also don't forget to go mine in those 9999 level dungeons. The only enemy is the boss down the corridor.
The high level makes for much better loot.

No, normally you don't. Unless you go way ahead of your abilities and somehow get enough money to buy multiple ranches or something that has an upkeep. You get paid twice in a month: 1st and 15th and only pay tax once.

I wasn't aware that picks actually did anything. Aren't they just pieces of furniture, or did they get additional features in newer versions of the game?

That was my impression too. My current character has about 15 in Mining, and she's mining walls in towns and hunting quests just fine without a pick...

Not only that... if food is no longer a concern and you don't mind gravels everywhere, you can use the House board's design function to fill your house with walls. Then you mine them out and repeat. You can get small amounts of money and ores easily.
