How to make ayleid forts?
« on: April 21, 2011, 10:30:40 am »

If you played oblivion for more than 20 minutes, surely you've been inside ayleid ruins. Do you have any ideas on how to make a similar style fort?

Okay for those who don't know, here's a pic: http://images.uesp.net//2/22/OB-place-Nornal.jpg

No idea what it looked like before it got destroyed or whatever.

Aboveground structures made of Alunite or any other pure white stone.
A large serrated disc here, another there.
Coffins spread nicely all over the place.
Some rooms with miasma (just dump pet corpses there or something).
Perhaps make the hallways 2 z-levels high each. Do this at least for the huge halls.
Smoothing the stone, not really engraving it.

I am unsure how the living rooms would look like. This is something I never get in Oblivion's Ayleid ruin complexes.

Don't forget waiting for ~100 years for moss to appear in any quantity (if you're going for the ruined look).

I wouldn't recommend using weapon traps for this sort of thing; you can do far more interesting stuff with pressure plates/repeaters/bridges.

Playing dwarf fortress ruined me for oblivion because I couldn't see how the ruins could possibly have been living settlements; they're never laid out efficiently or defensibly.  :P

What about farming?

Could do it overland. Some Alyeid ruins have water in them; you could use that as an excuse to make a paddy-field-style farm plot.

Outdoor farming sucks, most of it you can't even eat raw. I'm not into cooking and everything.

Remember that in a ruin there is no maintenance.

This means flooding and cave-ins can occur, so the accessible portion of the ruins are probably only a small fraction of the structure before it was abandoned and decayed. Also a lot of the structure could have been above ground.

You could basically just be exploring their basements and catacombs while their cities were above ground.

let's see:

edible raw indoor crops:
Plump Helmets

edible raw outdoor crops:
Prickle Berries
Fisher Berries
Wild Strawberries
Rat Weed
Sun Berry
Muck Root
Bloated Tuber

so, uh...

There are tons of maps of ayleid ruins here: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Ayleid_Ruins; you can copy the layouts exactly if you so desire.

Dwemer ruins in Morrowind, on the other hand...

Actually I would use giant axe blades, most ayelid ruins have them. They also have large amounts of spike traps, and some of them have large, falling blades in the roof. And lets not forget the ceiling-crushing floorplates. No idea how one could build those.

While you're at it, why not make some of those towers from the planes of oblivion? :P

You also need some torture rooms, according to the lore from Knights of the Nine.

But thinking about it, there is a major and fortress-breaking flaw here.

Ayleids were ELVES. You can't just go around and construct a pansy elf place in Dwarf Fortress, can you?

Go with the Dwemer ruins of Morrowind. While Dwemer were technically also elves according to the lore (*cries*), they were at least known as "Dwarves" in Cyrodiil.

Bronze and Bismuth Bronze towers
Magma!
Mining tunnels
A bearded ghost here, another there
Also some huge halls, some accounting for 2 z-levels.
Either do the walls with metal, or engrave them all.
Little bedrooms here and there. Give them a table and a chest, too.
Metal and gem stockpiles!
Furniture made of heavy metals.

Ooooh yeah.

Actually I would use giant axe blades, most ayelid ruins have them.

Considering the damage they do, drawbridges are probably more accurate (putting something on a slow repeater is a more accurate representation regardless, since you'd only get hit by them if you were being an idiot).

They also have large amounts of spike traps,

Build a drawbridge with spikes under it.

And lets not forget the ceiling-crushing floorplates

Some kind of inane drawbridge + landmine combo should work.
