That server error is the only thing that comes up besides "version mismatch" and a successful connection. Just keep trying servers.

I can imagine a trench warfare mode, with barbed wire and where digging is slower, forcing you to use mortars to blow holes in the enemy's barbed wire.

I can't wait to see more depth put into this. Hopefully it'll eventually be a little less casual gaming and a little more "oh shit this is a warzone", while still keeping the fun appeal.
