Yeah, I've done this.  Start digging a big pit downwards with a little pillar-staircase in the middle, and build a big ol' fort on top of the pillar.

And, of course, once tired with the fort, dig out the pillar.

I've been tempted to try a fort like this, strip mining all around a central pillar, use the stones to build a fortress above said pillar, spiral ramp down the pillar, and tiny shaky rope(single tile, wood maybe?) bridges to each edge.

The only problems I see is things like goblins and such being able to fire down on your miners, and traders/liasons getting stuck along the walls(since you can't ever channel away the very edge of the map).

Pencils could be made with erasers at both ends, but what would be the point?

Even for dwarveness, this sounds pointless. Espeically for FPS reasons.
Actually, entirely channelled layers are not walkable therefore only the bottom open level would allow pathing.

how about you hollow out a large portion of the middle down to the magma sea and then build a huge tower around it using the obtained rock.
then make sacrifices to Armok off it.

Isn't there an issue with the game trying to compute empty spaces that creates more burdens on the processor? At least that's what I used to hear about df

There's only one way to find out.

And I'm not going to remove all the ramps, only the ones that won't be used for maintenance . The ground floor will be a large road over the chasm that goes to the main tower.

I do limited amounts of strip mining but primarily for digging out great halls or for reshaping the caverns, because I like flat caverns.

Its great for digging out huge, massive halls for a fortress though, and the excavation will result in massive amounts of gem and ore for later usage.

Yes, it will absolutely murder your FPS while doing the mining, but once its done FPS will go back up.

Called open pit mining.

Boring and long, but will train very well your miners and most likely give you plenty of useful minerals.

Wikipedia calls it surface mining.

Either way, it's just dwarven enough that I can't not try it.

I tried a small area in my current fortress. My method is working pretty well. The next question should be what kind of site should I try this out in? since I'd be doing it all the way to the magma sea, i don't think I should try it near a volcano. An area that freezes would be useful for damming the underground lakes.

I've always wanted to do a fort sort of like the settlements on Utapau from Revenge of the Sith - a massive hole in the ground with all the rooms facing onto it. So I'll be watching your progress with interest...  8)

I've been thinking about doing something like this for a while now. Basically, digging down from above to sculpt a castle, rather than constructing one. The only really difficult part is finding a site that gives me enough z-levels of a material I like the colour of. Well, that and figuring out a way to collapse the soil down to the 'new' ground level.
