Surface mining Fortress project
« on: April 12, 2011, 10:51:34 pm »

Has anybody actually tried this?

For the disengaged, surface mining is where you carve away an entire layer of rock instead of mining shafts and tunnels. I'm thinking about doing it in my current fortress. Why?

I did this on a small scale, as that's how you mine out clusters...
Nothing like mining out an entire layer, though.

It's an interesting idea but it would take so much more time than just building above ground.

That's why you don't strip mine a certain area. And I'm talking large scale, like all the way down to the magma sea level.

So wait - you want to make your embark a giant hole, and have all the stone it's made of in boulders?

And then you'd rebuild something with the stone?

Sounds... like a painstakingly extended project.

Fixed that for ya.

Even for dwarveness, this sounds pointless. Espeically for FPS reasons.

Save for a section of clay (and maybe some sand). I'm not going to let the stone dictate how many building materials I get to have!

Fuck yes, mine out the whole map and rebuild it in ARMOK's image using smooth blocks.
Bonus points for putting a few cast obsidian layers to muddy for trees just to piss off the elves when you cut them down.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

Next fortress will be dedicated to carving out a massive hole in the ground.

I always do this, I level mountians, carve multi tower modern like cities skylines out of mountains.  I like to dig a reverse hollow tower going down.  If I have a tall volcanoe, I will strip mine it flat and leave a gigantic smokestack for my truly Armokian Forges.  Sometimes I just do it to the sides of mountains to create a giant (50+z level) flat cliff.  Or I did into the face that way to create a bunch of asain rice paddy farms, complete with water.  Or I make truly Armokian Olympic pools this way.

strip mining is run.  The up ramp is your friend, unless there is a tree above you.
