Yet Another D&D 3.5 Campaign (Session over!)
« on: April 10, 2011, 02:07:29 pm »

For most of your lives, you have lived in the village of Three Cedars, on the northern border of the kingdom of Kalbania.  Three Cedars is not exactly the most interesting place.  It's a bit small and secluded, and life is rather tedious.  The local militia deals with the occasional attempted goblin raid, but that's pretty much as interesting as life gets in Three Cedars.

Every few weeks, a merchant caravan is sent off from the town, to buy and sell cheap goods and foods.  These tend to be lightly guarded.

For one reason or another, you've all signed up to guard the next caravan out of town.

25 point buy for ability scores.  Starting level is 1.  Max HP for first level, and roll for health on Invisible Castle for other levels, using your character's full name.  70 GP for starting equipment.  Cheap material components for spells (less than 10 GP) will be ignored.  Basic clothing is free.  Please use something like Myth-Weavers for character sheets.

Paladins are considered a favored class for everyone, to avoid multiclassing-related forced XP penalties.

Sourcebooks allowed for character creation:
*PHB
*DMG
*Complete Adventurer
*Complete Scoundrel
*Complete Warrior
*Complete Divine (Modification to Divine Metamagic: you may not cast spells that, with the metamagic spell level adjustment applied, would be higher level than what you can cast.)

If you want something that isn't in one of those sourcebooks, post the details and I'll decide whether to allow it.  Yes, this means homebrew stuff is allowed, if reasonably balanced.

If you really want to play one of the NPC classes, good luck.  This is not recommended.

No psionics.  None.

No evil characters.  None.

If you want your character's background to have a serious effect on the game, PM me and we'll talk about it.

Games will be on Sundays, starting at any time from about 7:00 PM GMT to about 11:00 PM GMT (whatever works best for players).

This is my first time actually GMing, so expect the occasional delay and problem in-game.

Maptool 1.3b85 and Hamachi will be required.

Players:
*Evergod41 (Aedrum Uslin, Human Fighter)
*Grek (Gnop Gnopson, Gnomish Gnight (Fighter))
*Mainiac (Becca the Smartass, Halfling Wizard)
*King_of_the_weasels (Mahtan Elensar, Half-Elf Swashbuckler)
*thiefwriter (Waiting for sheet)
*Dwarmin (Loaw'Kaldaka, Kobold Ranger)
*Powder Miner (Wellby Thorngage, Halfling Barbarian)
*Araph (Auras, Pixie Rogue)

Current GMPC Healer/Cannon Fodder: Gniles Gn. Geartooth

Actually Accessing The Game: Hamachi server name is "Bay 12 Jack A T DnD", password is "urist" (both without quotation marks).  After connecting, open Maptools, go to file, and click on "connect to server".  From there, go to the Direct tab and type in my Hamachi IP.

We use IRC now.  Connect to irc.globalgamers.net with an IRC client.  Channel is #jackatdnd.

I'd be interested in joining.

No races with level adjustment.

Would it be possible for me to change a race with a level adjustment so that it's balanced without the level adjustment? I guess it'd be homebrewed in that case.

Edit: Also, what's the world like? Is it a thriving continent with most of the races living peacefully? Or is it a crapsack world, with everyone being at war, bandits everywhere, devils and stuff, etc. Also, is there a rough map we could see?

Yes, though it'll have to be approved by me.  And I'm going to be rather cautious when it comes to approval of stuff like that.  I'd prefer the use of standard races, but you can try.

Edit: Also, what's the world like? Is it a thriving continent with most of the races living peacefully? Or is it a crapsack world, with everyone being at war, bandits everywhere, devils and stuff, etc. Also, is there a rough map we could see?
In-between.  Definitely closer to the former than the latter, though.

Generally, the deeper you get within civilized lands, the less bandits and monsters there are.  Three Cedars is located in an odd area, in that, although it is a border town, it's rather calm.  Still more bandity/monstery hazards than, say, the capital, but it's in an oddly calm area of the kingdom.

You don't tend to hear much clear news around Three Cedars, but Kalbania seems to be on the verge of war with the western kingdom of Gardis.  These are only rumors, though.  Pretty much all diplomatic discussions between the two countries are kept semi-secret, or as much so as possible.

I'll try to have a semi-clear-looking map up soon.

Ok, here it is:

Spoiler: Homebrewed Pixie Race (click to show/hide)

And for comparison:

Spoiler: SRD Pixie Race (click to show/hide)

Which parts of mine are overpowered? I know that there are a few, but I'm not a very good judge. Just say what you don't like and I'll nerf the crap out of it.

Well, my other two weekend games are, more or less, ended, so I'll join up.

* Base Land Speed is 20 feet. It also has a fly speed of 60 feet (good).
* Low Light Vision
* A pixie receives Weapon Finesse as a bonus feat.
* +1 Natural armor bonus.
* Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A pixie is automatically proficient with the longbow, the short sword, and all simple weapons.
* Invisiblilty (Su): A pixie is invisible, exept when performing a standard or full round action. He can suppress or resume this ability with a free action.
* Spell resistance equal to 10 + class levels.
* Spell-Like Ability: 1/day -- Detect chaos/law/good/evil/thoughts/magic
* +2 Racial bonus on Listen, Search, and Spot checks.
* Automatic Languages: Common, Sylvan. Bonus Languages: Elven, Gnome, Halfling.
* Favored Class: Sorcerer

Which parts of mine are overpowered? I know that there are a few, but I'm not a very good judge. Just say what you don't like and I'll nerf the crap out of it.
I... probably shouldn't butt in, given that my opinion isn't directly relevant, but god damn it. The sheer number of things that make this clearly not LA +0 is pretty staggering.

I would really, really recommend working from an existing player race, and attempting to shift it into a pixie, rather than starting with a pixie and trying to power it down.

Sorry. I've never actually done any homebrewed stuff before, and I'm sorta new to DnD.

Is this any better?

Araph: I'm comparing your Pixie race to the PHB races.

PHB race abilities tend to be at the level of seeing in the dark and a lot of small and/or highly specific skill/attack roll bonuses.  Elves are immune to magical sleep, dwarves have +2 bonuses to saving throws against magic and poisons, gnomes can cast a highly limited form of a level 1 spell once per day, and humans get a free feat and more skill points, but that's pretty much as big as it gets.

Your pixie moves faster than a medium 8th level monk, has permanent invisibility, has a good bit of spell resistance, and has a big pool of mostly level 1 spells that it can use one of once a day.  And the ability score bonuses/penalties make me a bit uneasy.

So...not approving this version.

And then you post a better one.

Checking this one out.

Okay.  Ability bonuses/penalties still make me uneasy, with their size and how numerous they are.  Lack of invisibility is a huge improvement.  Biggest problem now, though, is the flight speed.  When you have a character that can move faster than a medium level 8 monk at level 1, something's probably wrong.  Not approving yet.

Evergod11: Good to hear that, and welcome.

Maybe not something I would allow in my game at LA 0, but it might work.
