Yeah, accessible sorium! Let's survey Titan!
GEV Yuri Gagarin is on its way to titan, ETA 4 hours.

Incidentally, some more minerals were discovered on the moons around saturn and jupiter. Pandora has a paltry amount of corbomite, not even worth mining. Rhea has 400k tons of duranium at 0.9 and 375k boronide at 0.9.

Should be fun. Its also generating some pretty hardcore industry.

Did you scan Jupiter yet?
Yep, nothing there unfortunately.

5th February, 2005 - An anomalous signal return from Titan during the GEV Yuri Gagarin's geological survey caused Captain Shep Smith to perform a low orbit detail sweep for more information. The source of this signal became apparent as the Yuri Gagarin's orbit passed over the northern polar region of Titan, a ruined outpost of unknown origin! Earth Governor Walter Marken has issued orders forming a xenobiology team to study the ruins and they have been sent to Titan.

Faced with continuing evidence of extraterrestrial life, the military might of the Earth has begun a process of reorganization to use and train with new Trans-Newtonian technologies. All existing ground forces have been converted into training cadre which will form the core of new ground units.

(I put the ruins there to spice it up a bit, and to go along with the story)

5th February, 2006 - As part of sweeping military reforms a new vessel has been designed. Capable of moving an entire brigade level ground unit at once, the Outreach class Troop Transport will weigh in at 18,000 tons. The Portsmouth orbital yards are being expanded to handle construction of this massive craft, the refit should be completed late next year. A third Discovery class vessel has been commissioned from the Portsmouth Orbital yard for the eventual survey and charting of the asteroid belt and Kuiper belt. Zoe Skov has been moved to governorship of Titan to assist with the xenoarcheology dig which is ongoing. Norma Donley steps in to fill Zoe's shoes as governor of Venusian mining operations.

22nd August, 2006 - GEV Thor Heyerdahl has launched under the command of Captain Sherry Peller and is tasked with surveying the asteroid belt.

15th November, 2006 - A team led by Doctor Kareem Tait has completed designs on a new nuclear reactor using TN materials to increase containment, power generation, and fuel efficiency by a large margin. The system is based on a pressurized water fission design which has been around for decades but utilizing new TN materials, the reactor can be miniaturized to the point that its use aboard spacecraft is feasible. Doctor Tait says that he is not done, and that a project is underway to develop a new drive system which works on principles uncovered during his research with the reactor.

12th February, 2007 - Now in his 5th year aboard the Yuri Gagarin, Captain Shep Smith has distinguished himself once again as he detected and charted TN mineral deposits within the core of Triton. Over 1 million tons of Duranium (0.9), Boronide (1), and Sorium (0.4) were discovered as well as a small quantity of Mercassium (275k at 0.9)

18th September, 2007 - The GEV Leif Ericson has suffered a maintenance failure in one of its four Scher-Martin Rocket Drives. The crew were able to make repairs but ground control feels that both the Leif Ericson and Yuri Gagarin are in need of maintenance overhauls. Both vessels have been in continuous service for more than four years and I'm sure many of their crew relish the idea of coming home. Both Discovery class vessels have been ordered to return to space dock. Estimated return time is 7.8 months.

4th April, 2008 - Doctor Tait has completed theoretical research on a new drive system which utilizes the thermal properties of a nuclear reaction to propel a spaceship. The drive is safe and emits no dangerous radiation, and provides 5 times the power of a conventional rocket motor. Doctor Tait is leading the efforts to adapt this research to a working prototype in collaboration with scientists from CACI and Boeing's aerospace divisions.

1st June, 2008 - The new nuclear thermal engine design is ready. The Orion IIC is a high reliability drive system with redundant safeties and monitoring equipment designed for long voyages with minimal maintenance. The Orion IIM is a smaller military drive with higher power and fuel consumption, with weight saved by including only basic safety systems. New designs for all ships are in place with significant weight savings, and all ships are returning to spacedock for refit.

As you can see, dismounting the 4 rocket motors and replacing them with one nuke drive has cut the weight and increased the speed of the discovery significantly. Likewise the estimated lifecycle has increased to an incredible 20 years, over the previous 7.

More later, I have to head to work now.

Could I have a commander named Flint?
I'll take a look. What would you like Flint to do?

As soon as you get any kind of fast offensive ship that will do.

I do plan to make some fast beam destroyers as escorts when we send survey ships to new systems. They'll have  main laser cannon and probably some point defense as well. I could put Flint in one of those, or in a command ship attached to them. Will that do?

Also, is Flint the first name or last name?

2nd December, 2008 - All old Earth military units have been converted into training cadre in preparation for the outfitting and organization of new TN-level high tech ground forces. The first of these new divisions, known as SolDefCom, will command the garrison forces responsible for policing and defense of Earth itself and will consist of 12 battalions of garrison troops broken into four commands, each responsible for a hemisphere of the globe. The first of these, SolDefComNor, is now at full strength and operating in the northern hemisphere as a police and peacekeeping force.

All UEF ships of the line will carry a company of marines for shipboard defense. Two battalions of Mobile Infantry have also been formed, with more to follow, and they are currently training in hazardous environment simulation complexes which approximate the conditions we have so far observed on other planets. In this way we may safely train our troops while vetting and testing new combat gear, interplanetary war is not a new concept for humanity, but its practice is proving more difficult than science fiction would have us believe. We will be ready if we run into a hostile life form out there.

In other news, four of the old Bayandor class freighters have been scrapped and broken down for parts so far. It was determined to be more cost-effective by 300% to simply build new ships than to refit the existing Bayandor vessels with new Orion II drives. Once the remaining six are broken down, new construction will begin on the Bayandor II. The GEV Leif Ericson is currently undergoing a full maintenance overhaul prior to her refit, the four large rocket motors will be dismounted and a new Orion IIM drive put in their place, making the ship both smaller and significantly faster. The crew compliment is cut from 168 to 93 as the new drive systems are more modern, more compact, and contain more built-in automation.

2nd August, 2009 - The Yuri Gagarin is put back into service following a maintenance overhaul and refit. She has been tasked with surveying Pluto/Charon and surveying the Kuiper Belt.

2nd November, 2009 - Geological surveys of all Sol system planetary bodies and moons have been completed. The mineral content of the Sol system is sufficient for operations in the near future but Humans will have to expand to other stars eventually. Most puzzling is the absence of any other alien life or artifacts in the Sol system beyond the Lunar crash site and the ruined outpost still under excavation on Titan. While TN materials science has advanced our culture in new and wondrous ways, we do not yet have a viable means of movement between the stars. Perhaps the Titan Base will hold the key.

10th August, 2011 - Doctor Eldridge Scher has developed a new type of stealth technology which operates on principles similar to some science fiction 'cloaking' devices. Doctor Scher is continuing to develop this technology in hopes that it will be useful should we encounter hostile alien life.

12th September, 2011 - Portsmouth Orbital yard has been expanded to handle vessels of up to 3100 tons. Corresponding increase in Earth's maintenance capacity has been ordered.

21st September, 2011 - After 10 years of work, the Venusian mining colony is at its preplanned strength. 100 automated mining facilities are in operation on the surface of Venus and minerals are returned to Earth via mass driver relay. Freighter fleet has been retasked with relocating prefabricated infrastructure to Titan for the establishment of a permenant settlement while excavation and study of the ruins continues.

21st January, 2012 - Fuel production on Earth has been halted. Current fuel reserves: 118 million Litres.

Incidentally, how is this? I know its been a bit dry since I have not yet encountered any aliens but Aurora is a bit slow to start and I want to be prepared. I was hoping the xeno team on Titan would have deciphered the ruins by now but they're taking a stupid long time. I just replaced some members giving the team a higher overall rating. I'm planning to use that as the event to kick off a gravitational survey of the system for jump points, then establish survey command and a new order of battle with escorts and jump tenders, etc.

29th January, 2012 - With infrastructure set up on Titan's surface, we need to transport colonists out there. As of yet we have no good solution for this, so we have developed the Nelson class vessel to fill this need. Modeled after oceangoing luxury cruise liners, the Nelson class ship will safely transport 1500 people through the vastness of space. The ship will hold more than 2000 souls all told, crew included. Keeping so many people fed, healthy, and safe in space is no easy feat.

12th February, 2012 - Anglovaal Ltd, a South African mining conglomerate, has purchased mineral rights for Triton and set up a civilian mining colony there. The UEF gladly purchases their mineral output, some 240 tons per year, which is being returned via mass driver to Earth.

21st April, 2012 - The xenoarcheology team on Titan has uncovered the alien ruins and identified 15 abandoned installations which could potentially be recovered. A wealth of scientific data and artifacts were uncovered as well and returned to Earth for examination.
