6th January, 2003 - Today saw the launching of the Leif Ericson, the first Discovery class spacecraft and the first spaceship ever constructed entirely in orbit by humankind. It is a monumental day as Captain Daniel Ruzich, commanding officer of the Leif Ericson, guides the spacecraft out of Portsmouth Orbital and embarks on a 5 year mission to chart the mineral wealth of the solar system. A second ship, the Yuri Gagarin, is currently undergoing construction and will be completed 15th September, 2003.

19th January, 2003 - In a startling move the Nordine Transport Services company has petitioned the UEF for permission to operate a space-based cargo and shipping service. Nordine Transport Services is a wholly owned subsidiary of Amtrak, and has offered to subsidize research into more reliable spaceship drive systems and the construction of a commercial shipyard complex in orbit.

6th March, 2003 - The UEF has completed the world's first commercial spaceport, located off the eastern coast of Africa. This complex will streamline orbital logistics and commercial traffic control on Earth and has paved the way for construction of an orbital commercial shipyard which should be completed in early May.

Not totally sure how Aurora works but I will still be following with interest.

Could I have a commander named Flint?

This looks like such an awesome game, but the lack of a manual or decent tutorials and the sheer obscurity of the interface overwhelmed me enough that I could never really play it.  It's far less user-friendly than DF.

I really like that game. Could Sheb Smith be the captain of the Yuri Gagarin?

I'll take a look. What would you like Flint to do?

6th May, 2003 - The world rejoiced today as the GEV Leif Ericson's telemetry from Venus indicated sizable deposits of TN minerals near the planet's core. Captain Daniel Ruzich, commander of the Leif Ericson, reports that a massive quantity of Corundium as well as substantial quantities of Sorium, Vendarite, Tritanium and Duranium were all located mere hours after switching on the new geological survey sensors. This came as a relief to the ground crew as the Leif Ericson had first surveyed Earth's moon Luna and found no TN minerals whatsoever, leading to doubts about the mission's future and the reliability of the seological survey sensors. Governor Walter Marken has announced a plan to convert a portion of the existing conventional infrastructure into automated mines for use on the Venusian surface, as well as a mass driver system for delivery of mined ore to Earth.

12th May, 2003 - Earth's first commercial spaceport has been completed in orbit through a joint construction effort between Amtrak and the Kawasaki Heavy Lift company, one of the first new industrial entities to begin exploiting TN materials in commercial applications. Kawasaki Heavy Lift has begun design work on a low-cow, fuel-efficient version of the Scher-Martin Rocket Drive system for use in commercial spacecraft.

Over 8 million tons of sorium on venus. We won't have fuel shortages for... well... ever.

Accessibility?
The Corundium and Vendarite are 0.9. The rest is a pretty terrible 0.1. Minerals discovered on Mercury too, but nothing special really.

7th July, 2003 - Scientists with the Kawasaki Heavy Lift company have developed the first spacecraft designed to carry cargo between planetary bodies. The Bayandor class spacecraft weighs in at 9,300 tons and will be constructed at the new Kawasaki Orbital Yard. With a crew of 100, the Bayandor can operate for extended periods in deep space without fear of maintenance failures or running low on fuel. Meanwhile telemetry from the Leif Ericson indicates that Captain Ruzich is currently orbiting on the far side of Mars, out of communication with Earth as he surveys the planet.

The first Bayandor class vessel, the Afghan, will be completed in November of this year.

Code: [Select]
Bayandor class Cargo Ship    9,300 tons     103 Crew     109.6 BP      TCS 186  TH 8  EM 0
43 km/s     Armour 1-39     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/0/0     Damage Control Rating 1     PPV 0
Maint Capacity 7 MSP    Max Repair 6 MSP
Cargo 5000

Kawasaki Heavy P (3)    Power 2.5    Fuel Use 10%    Signature 2.5    Armour 0    Exp 1%
Fuel Capacity 50,000 Litres    Range 96.8 billion km   (26041 days at full power)

This design is classed as a Commercial Vessel for maintenance purposes

6th August, 2003 - The first step of the conversion process has completed today as 100 new mining facilities came online. Work is underway to convert these facilities so that they may operate under automated computer direction on the surface of venus and other worlds. In addition, two mass driver systems are being constructed for delivery and receipt of mineral packets between the two planets.

23rd October, 2003 - The GEV Yuri Gagarin has been completed in Earth orbit. Captain Sheb Smith has been assigned to the survey vessel after proving himself a natural at simulated survey runs and exploratory missions in Earth's military academy.

GEV Yuri Gagarin has been retasked to perform a geological survey of Saturn. ETA: 128 days at best speed.

Also, no luck on Mars. Looks like Mercury and Venus are our only mineral sources in the inner solar system.

Mmmmh, and pretty poor minerals sources at that. Hopefully I'll save the day.

Well the Sorium is quite welcome as it is used for building labs, refining fuel, and constructing missiles I believe. Even at 0.1 accessibility, it will be a steady stream of material for a long long time.

1st December, 2003 - The FT Afghan has been completed and assigned to the command of Commodore Burton Gilpatric. The FT Afghan has been tasked with delivering automated mines to Venus as they are completed. The Afghan is the largest spacecraft ever constructed which can take off and land on planetary bodies, and today marks a monumental achievement for mankind. Gone are the days of one-use rocket boosters or unmanned probe missions, Now human beings will go out into the solar system and see what is there for themselves.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

6th April, 2004 - The GEV Yuri Gagarin has arrived at Saturn and is conducting its geological survey. The GEV Leif Ericson has begun to survey the moon Ganymede. So far no further mineral deposits have been detected. FT Afghan continues to ferry automated mining equipment to Venus. As the first human to visit another world, Commodore Burton Gilpatric had this to say:

"Stepping off the ramp now... the surface is hard, like baked rock or clay. A lot of fog in the air, hard to see without radar imaging. The air is very thick, making it hard to move, and my suit reads an external temp of 460C. It really is hell down here..."

10th May, 2004 - Discovered two new mineral sources in the outer solar system. Both Saturn and Ganymede have Sorium deposits. Ganymeded has 5 million tons of Sorium at 0.1 accessibility, Saturn has 600,000 tons at 0.6 accessibility.

6th September, 2004 - FT Airdale, under command of Captain Pete Meshell, has been completed and joins FT Afghan in the ongoing effort of moving mining equipment to Venus. A total of 10 Bayandor class freighters are planned at this time. The Kawasaki Heavy orbital yard is being refitted to add an additional slipway to allow for a tighter construction schedule. In other news, Zoe Skov has been appointed governor and administrator of all mining operations on Venus and has arrived on-planet with a geology team in hopes of finding new deposits of mineral wealth near the core.
