Personally, I think the forums are so clean because of a few reasons:

A relativly small userbase: Not many trolls know about us
Dwarf Fortress: Acts as a great filter for the trolls that DO find us
Great community: Frowns on trolls, doesn't feed the trolls and as such, the trolls shrivel up and drop off.
Well, there was Pathos. WE ARE ALL IS HE.

Realy? Wow... What spawned this massive influx of people that I missed?
Ah, I have the exact reason for this. It happened because our forum was linked on the front page of reddit. So basically it was caused by reddittiers(yes, reddittiers) coming to look at our site, and subsequently swamping it.
IIRC, this in turn was because of the Night Creature release, wasn't it? I think they happened at about the same time.

But toady hammers him and his sockpuppets down on a regular basis.

The forums are really not that clean. In fact, most of the forums I visit are a lot nicer. These forums have sort of become undiscussable lately, since everything reaches 5 pages in a day, most of it just idle conversation.

DF hardly filters out the trolls, there are certainly plenty here. A troll is not born out of stupidity, it is born of a mixture of boredom and anti-social tendencies. Anyone who understands DF has to have plenty of time on their hands and tend to be just a bit sadistic.

Toady does do an excellent job of moderating the forums, though.

Indeed, us are too many.

I guess it's also kind of telling about the troll-less-ness of this place that hewe became such a meme. Or perhaps not. Maybe that's more attributable to the forumites' personalities.

what forums are you visiting?

I'm looking at the general discussion, and seeing civil discussions about politics, books, anime, protests, security, various organizations, and so forth. I've seen long, civil, and productive conversations on religion, finance, gender differences, cultural differences, time zones, and a huge host of other things. The creative projects section is full of people making games, learnign programming, drawing pictures, writing poetry, and all sorts of crazy stuff. Life advice has practically written persuasive and informative essays.

The various forums on DF itself are generally funny and polite, and often springboard into discussions on research in the game itself. At other tiems it leads to long, great reads on what happens to other people.

What forums can top that?

You don't have to stay on 15/page, Muz.

That's the best part, I love the active userbase around here.

These forums have sort of become un-discussable lately, since everything reaches 5 pages in a day, most of it just idle conversation.
I have a hard time keeping up sometimes, but today I switched to 50/page. It makes everything way easier to only load new pages less than 1/3 as often.

I've been doing that since my first visits into HAPPY and while my megaproject page was still quite active.

On the topic of adbots, they have spawned a few interesting and funny threads, although it was not intended. As we work around here, we can make lemonade out of lemon threads (IE-pointless, or useless threads).

-ad bot accounts-
I like how a lot of these have to do with plumbing, though I doubt any of them sell anything rated for lava transport.

Thanks for the 50/page thing. I didn't know that :)

I agree about the cleaned of the forums. There might be some swearing here and there but the worst* things are usually taken out by Toady.
*modded in sex/wrestling (although hacking DF is probably the worst thing but this was also pretty badly received.)

When people were talking about the most evil thing you have ever done and someone said toady removed it (I think he did, nit sure) most posters just answered something like: you don't want to know, or we shouldn't be saying this and the only real answer was a link to someone vaguely explaining what it was.

I'm not very active in the lower part of the forums but I'm sure it is civilized enough considering the Egypt thread is still on topic (or again, it might have had a few derails) and has pretty much evolved to a Libya thread. I also agree with the respect for Toady thing, it's true :)

Not that I think about it, I need to read if the NorwayArmy guy has updated his thread/blog.

Honestly, we do have the cleanest discussions on "difficult issues" that I've ever seen, despite the extreme diversity of the people here.  Having argued with folks over at xkcd, I can say that the tolerance here seems a lot higher for a. discussing politely and b. discussing passionately.

I guess the main thing I feel is that it's not necessary to be hyper-rational here, where "rational" means "cold."

That, and my requests over here are pretty much always met by someone trying to help, whereas over there folks will often just ignore new threads; I don't think I've ever seen an open thread here with zero posts, even from spambots.  They also don't reply to each other much.  As much as threads over here can often come off sort of lolrandum, I think the derailing comes from us actually talking to each other.

Also, our Mafia is better :I

I'll admit that if you really want to have an indepth conversation over some piece of obscura, though, you're more likely to find "experts" at xkcd.

I miss the days when Toady just edited addbot posts instead of deleting them, sure I guess it was unfeasable and he only did it because the old forum software didn't allow for outright deletion, but I still have fond memories of that post about the virtues of power gaming.

I actually find it awesome how our mafia arguments can get so fiery in comparison to the rest of the forum. Sure, that's how the game is played, but the net result is that it becomes the most violent, blood lusting, Khorne Armok worshiping board here when the players are in game. I find it an exciting change of pace, not to mention a great stresskiller.
