I remember an adbot that was marketing gold or something and there was at least 50 replies to that thread with just hilarious banter that I thought was really entertaining.  Just seeing stuff like that is really cool.

I don't believe in measuring peoples intelligence at all.  Every person is able to judge actions for themselves and that's where I base my opinion on a person at.  Otherwise I'd try being friends with people who just mocked me insincerely.

Sometimes the forum pisses me off when it starts turning into an instant message service for 100 or so replies (at least it's always the same culprits), but other than that it is pretty relaxing for me.  I don't like getting in arguments usually even if I disagree with somebody and I always find I'm better off just ignoring the person instead of swelling all the attention of a thread to some stupid debate full of single sentences.  I didn't come here to get stressed out man.

And also yes I do respect Toady a lot, he he he.

It's a great way to add some fuckin' emphasis. Also, it doesn't make much sense to censor everyone when everyone uses swearwords in everyday life anyway. I used to be on a forum that heavily censored swearing, going to the point where people were banned for it. When swearing is more taboo, people swear more. It's weird.

Not a fan of censorship, myself.  My parents didn't censor anything from me as a kid, and I grew up swearing like an adult.  I would even swear around teachers, but not a single one ever seemed to notice.  I think it's because I did it so casually.  It was just part of my normal speech and blended in.  When other kids swore, it was to be rebellious and intentionally vulgar.

I'm raising my kids the same way.  It's a little more difficult today, because censorship is more viciously enforced.  They send kids home in elementary schools around here for using proxy swear words.  But so far we have had no incidents with our school age child swearing in school, even though he's a sailor at home.  And all of our friends (some of whom normally hate children) list our kids as their favorite and love to have them around because they're entertaining and adult conversations can be held in a relaxed manner around them.

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with needing a set minimal IQ to see the site. People below that level just see a giant toad saying "Amplify your unsuspicious states, there's no community here, just me".

Also, this is the best internet community out there if you don't count the insane death traps that are engineered on a day to day basis.

Despite all these theorys of the induction process and atmosphere, the truth is that it is because we have Kurtulmak who applies the ban hammer to anybody that takes a single step out of line. Even think about posting in all caps and you will feel he's wrath.

The reason I bring it up is that most message boards that aren't explicitly about adult topics at least give some lip-service to the idea that underage people are viewing them.  Heck, even the Something Awful forums have a (infamously inept) language filter for unregistered viewers*.  Around here, you can declare that you're thirteen years old, and not only does (almost) nobody give you shit over it, but nobody even really bats an eye.

*Of course, that one's a joke anyway, since it replaces "fuck" with "gently caress", but the post-edited message is "[user] fucked around with this message at [time]".

But I'd say the clean part is not only just due to DF, but because (with two exceptions) this is a large board that has only two well-known moderators, yet doesn't go to crap because of that, which is probably surprising to a few people.
