While all the intellectual backpatting is probably warranted about how awesome everyone here is, the adjective "clean" caught my attention.  This is easily one of the most foul-mouthed forums I've seen anywhere on the Internet with no limits or caveats, and among forums that actually have mods who give a damn about policing sexual material, it still manages to be one of the raunchiest of its kind at times.  Moreso some days than others, but still.

That has nothing to do with attitude or "intelligence" by any means, I just thought it was interesting.

Sure, we're profane and perverted. But that's easily balanced out by how friendly, intelligent, hygienic, good-looking, strong, and generally just amazing we are.

I agree with Aqizzar here. We're far from clean, and I've seen plenty of "cleaner" forums around. I prefer it this way, though, because it lends the place the human touch; more restrictive forums always felt vaguely apprehensive and tense to me.

Outright idiocy, though still present, isn't here in such magnitude because of the small community and the relatively obscure game the forums revolve around.

I'M GLAD YOU ASKED.  THESE FORUMS USE OXICLEAN.
AND IF YOU BUY NOW YOU COULD CLEAN YOUR FORUMS TOO

Yeah, the learning curve of DF means just to get in the upper forums you need to have above average IQ and tons of patience.

I would definitely place the emphasis on patience.  DF requires tons of it, and impatient people tend to be volatile, even if intelligent.  This is probably the best thing this forum has going for it.  Patience is a large part of 'chill' and everyone here seems to have a good amount of it.

We do have many radicals here (I myself am an anarchist), but we are patient with each other so it doesn't provoke as many episodes as in other places.

Toady and Threetoe are also great moderators, it seems.  I haven't been here as long as many of you, but most moderators I've dealth with on other forums have been horrible.  I've actually seen some really interesting cases of the tiniest bit of power completely changing a person's personality.  Kinda scary.

Most of us are quite internet savvy, which also helps a lot.

I know one other forum that is almost as good as this one, while actually being much larger.  ZBrushCentral.  Awesome place.  It has slightly more and worse outbreaks of uncivility than Bay12Forums, but I'd still place it second.  Once again, it's a place where people go to share knowledge on a software that takes a lot of patience to learn, so there you have it.

I'd also like to point out that long long ago most of the internet was actually about as chill as this place is.  I've been frequenting chat rooms and forums since '96, and things were way different back then.  The general public believed that being on the internet meant you were either a nerd or a serial killer.  So there was kind of a social taboo filter that made the internet mostly populated by decent, open-minded people.  It started going downhill as socializing and finding hobbies online became more acceptable.  I mentioned something about a chatroom in a high school classroom in '97, and the girl sitting next to me exploded in "OH MY GOD AREN'T YOU AFRAID THAT SOMEONE'S GOING TO FIND OUT WHERE YOU LIVE AND COME RAPE AND KILL YOU IN YOUR SLEEP LIKE IN THAT ONE MOVIE?!?!"  Today I imagine that same girl is on the internet every day, still spewing ignorance.

We do have many radicals here (I myself am an anarchist), but we are patient with each other so it doesn't provoke as many episodes as in other places.

I originally read that as 'antichrist'. But we do have a high number of radicals; I'm a Libertarian/Objectivist, and we have a large number of communists here as well.

... Yeah, you're probably right on that one.  Kinda weird.

I also find it vaguely strange that we can often have heated arguments around here without them devolving into flame wars.  It's super-nice.

I think the MSPA forums are pretty nice too, but for a different reason.

Whereas the mods on, say, the sporums were sort of like Giant Death Robots that would preforate you with bullets if you so much as toed the line, the Mods here are more like... Your boss. You don't want to screw around because they exude that sort of professional, suit-and-tie sort of aura. While the forums themselves don't have the same feel, the fact that the mods have that ability means that most people begin to feel awkward when they type out something that breaks the rules. Not like their doing something death-defying and rebelloious, just awkward.

As for the MSPA forums, the mods remind me of cops. They actively participate in the forums and discussions, they act like normal people, and then they just happen to have the power to ban you.

Also both mods tend to give examples of why the user was banned instead of a soviet-like disappearing act. Almost as if they-

I had a typed a post here and then decided it wasn't really an addition to the topic, nor interesting, nor funny.

So I deleted it and didn't post it.

We also do a lot of stuff together away from the forum, I guess.  That tends to help.  I haven't seen that many other fora where folks will get together and livestream, play other games together off-site, and so on.  The creative projects section helps a lot, too... I think there's a nice balance between news, fluff, intuitive-academia, and rational-academia (and mafia-rage) that makes everything settle out.
