Werewolf games.
« on: April 06, 2011, 08:38:47 pm »

So, yeah. Games where you can play as a werewolf.

I've been looking for a good one for about as long as I've known about video games. By far the best I've ever encountered is the Bloodmoon expansion in Morrowind, though I was a bit disappointed that there was very little you could do with it after beating the Bloodmoon main quest.
My dream game I guess would be something that combines the freeform lycanthropy of Bloodmoon with the directed sneaky no-good-doing of Thief or the Dark Brotherhood quests in Oblivion. Emphasis on keeping your identity secret and avoiding suspicion in the spirit of the forum game would also be totally rad. I'm under no illusions this game actually exists, because werewolves are a poor, neglected supernatural minority compared to vampires and their ilk.

Anyway,
Games with playable werewolves that I've played:
Morrowind: Bloodmoon
Zelda: Twilight Princess
Operation Darkness
Castlevania Judgement (Cornell)
Diablo 2 (Shapeshifting Druid)
Daggerfall
Nethack
CastlevaniaRL

Werewolf games I haven't played:
Castlevania: LoD
Werewolf: The Last Warrior
Wolfteam
Tales of the Tempest
Gabriel Knight II: The Beast Within
Darkstalkers (Jon Talbain)
Altered Beast (...sorta)
Night Creatures (ditto)
Various terrible browser games

Not really werewolves but might come up:
Castlevania: SoTN (Vampire; doesn't count)
Okami (Missing half the equation here)

The bonus points go to games where changing into a werewolf isn't just a power boost + model change. That's what made Bloodmoon so great.

I know there's an old old PC (I think it was PC) game about this...I'll see if I can dig it up.  Saw it on Underdogs a very long time back.

I'll be keeping an extremely close eye on this topic.

Still pissed that they cancelled the WW:tA game way back when.

Baldur's Gate has a cloak that polymorph's you into a regular wolf but I think that isn't what you want.

If not under Neotemplar look for Vellum.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm has a playable werewolf race called the Worgen. However, it probably isn't what you're looking for as the Worgen play and are treated like any other race.

Werewolves that look like regular wolves are the classic form, and totally cool. To be honest that's what I picture when imagining the dream game I mentioned up top.

But yeah, I don't think voluntarily shapeshifting/polymorphing into a wolf is quite the same as lycanthropy, or else I'd be including the druid from NWN in there too.

speaking of NWN, you could go on a RP server and apply to play a werewolf. I have done that before and had a great time, and died a horrible death to hunters, only after I had wrought my havok of course.

There is a multiplayer mod for Mount&Blade: Warband called The Hunt, which was werewolves vs hunters in a medieval setting, and also great fun. The werewolves didn't look like proper werewolves though, due to certain limits in the engine.

Oblivion has at least one werewolf mod.

Take care,

Inner Worlds has you playing as a woman that can change into a wolf. Though it's a platformer, so no secrecy or anything.

The original Legacy Of Cain gives you the ability to change into a were-wolf like form and regular folks WILL attack you if they see you.
Of course, your default form is a vampire and they'll attack you if they see that as well, if my memory serves  8)

That's the one I was thinking of!

...Ah, I was misremembering there being significantly different gameplay then.  :/
