Well, you can bid, but it can get annoying, and crafting can sometimes be hit and miss, depending on what materials you get.
A good part of crafting is that theres a chance to make a unique variant, which is basically just improvement, like my hot edge has a bonus against constructs, and my helmet has a medium bonus to normal defence.

Ok, apparently tier 2 gives much better cash than tier 1 did. Made over 2000 crowns just in 2 levels of tier 2 diving alone. I solo'd it all the way down there too, so tons of mats.

Quick and dirty guide to AH pricing:
FOR MANUFACTURED GOODS

1) identify item you wish to sell. "Brandish", for example.
2) look that item up on the AH.
3) switch the sort to "buy price".
4) look at the top (least expensive) price. Take a couple hundred crowns off of that.
5) put the buyout price at the number you reached at step 4. Put the bid a couple thousand under that or at the cost to make the item (whichever is higher).
???
7) profit.

edit: Note: If your item has a UV, price according to other UVs, not to the normal item. High UVs are worth more than Low UVs, etc, etc. If no UVs exist, assume +5k or 10k over normal items or the lower level of UV.

Looking at the AH this second, I see blue shards worth 80 95 each, so a good price for a stack of 10 would be like 795 945. Where are you getting your numbers?

Well, if you're looking to sell whatever you want, fast, that'll certainly do it.

I suppose there was one thing I left out in my 'quick and dirty' guide - the numbers there are for manufactured goods.

If you're selling raw mats, it's a bit more simple:

1) look up the thing you want to sell (ex: blue shards)
2) sort "buy price"
3) take that price, take off 1-5 crowns for your buyout price.
4) post your offering. I usually do a start bid of 50% of my final price.

So, as I mentioned a post up, if you see blue shards going for 95 each, post a group of 10 of them for 945 buyout, 500 start bid.

Edit: I take it ecto drops are worth next to nothing then?

Brimstone, scrap metal, gel drops, gel cores, brute gel cores (sensing a pattern?), ecto drops, rocket sprockets and waste modules are among the most worthless things in the Spiral Knights universe.

That's not to say you can't sell them, as small amounts are used up in some recipies, so there is a small demand for them, but you're honestly probably better off just holding on to them. Heck, I've got something like 600 scrap metal. Why? Why not?

You can sell those to the regular traders for like 1 crown if you really don't want to have it in your inventory and don't want to waste time selling it on the market.

I decided not to wait and used the "buy now" option (250 to bid, 750 to buy) to get 2 from auction last night... I consider crowns a free resource, since with limited energy you have to grind anyway.

Constructs and gremlins. Think gun puppies and robots for your iron gear needs. After a few delves into levels heavy with them they are not a problem anymore.
