The surgeon nods, and puts the coins back into his pocket. He then searches through Jonathan's backpack.

Surgeon: "Are you sure? Because I don't see anything."

Whisper Seargent (We're attempting to assist you and enlist your aid. Since you ignored my request, I'll just do whatever. Check your pockets.)

The sergeant reaches into his pocket, and pulls out the angel statue. Confused, he looks around at his men. They shrug, and return to their work.

Sergeant: "Alright. If you really are angels, then why are you asking for my help? Shouldn't you be helping, I don't know, a hero or something?"

The surgeon reaches down, and picks up the tonic and bandages.

Surgeon: "Ah, excellent."

The surgeon looks arounds, and hollers: "Who wants to earn some money?"

Almost instantly a crowd of people, desperate for money, run out of their homes and out of the alleyways. They mob the surgeon, vying for his attention. The surgeon picks two of the healthiest men. Dejected, the rest of the people return to their homes and alleyways.

The two men begin to walk down the street with the surgeon leading, while Jonathan is carried between the two, rather roughly. The surgeon leads the haulers through the streets of the city. Soon, the streets become wider and more straight, until the group is walking down an unusually long street. Between the gaps between buildings are not alleyways, but platforms with cranes and pulleys. A multitude of sounds rise from below the street, as ships sail in and out of docks and piers, their sailors cursing as two ships collide, or as they laboriously haul goods up to the street. One of the labourers awkwardly elbows his companion.

Labourer: "We must be on the Merchant's bridge."

The two labourers grin at each other.

The sergeant thinks for a moment. Then, he lets loose a laugh.

Sergeant: "No, seriously, who the fuck are you?"

The sergeant turns around, and yells at his men: "Godsdamn it, why the fuck are you bastards taking so long?"

The soldiers begin to scurry about, searching for the other rider of the metal monster.

The surgeon leads the labourers to a door, and opens it for the pair. Inside is a dark, wooden staircase, with doors that lead to several apartments. Chamber pots and bits of garbage lie around the doors. The surgeon leads the labourers up the staircase, to his apartment. Hurriedly, the surgeon opens the windows, to help the men see.

The surgeon's apartment is small and dark, even with its two narrow windows open. A great, blood-stained table dominates the centre of the room. The surgeon removes a few wooden plates, cups and utensils from the table, and helps to move Jonathan onto the table. Around this great table are several cupboards, from which the surgeon pulls out his knives and saw. An empty brazier lies in a corner of the room, and in the opposite corner of the room is a chest, from which the surgeon pulls out a leather apron. The surgeon gives a bowl to his two helpers, and directs them to a place from which they could fill it. As the pair leave, the surgeon begins to sharpen his tools.
