Normally use d6, d20 and d100. Mostly d6 for RTD's. I have used more special dice for other forum games. (The d23 is a wonderfull thing)
Speaking of semigeneric fantasy RTD's... [Pre post edit: It started out as semigeneric fantasy]
(What follows is based on a mix of books, old television cartoons, some other stuff and eldritch knowledge. I travel by bus to school every day, and as such have nothing better to do.)
In the time before time there was nothing. An endless black ocean of chaos and darkness filled the world, and out of this darkness the first Gods were born. They seperated the land from the water, and the day from the night. Yet the land was empty, and so they created the Ancients. The Ancients were, like the Gods, without form nor shape. Learning from their creators, they created the animals of the land and the sea, and all other life. However, there was one secret the Gods wouldn't teach, the gift of sentience. And so it came to be that the Ancient stole the sacred knowledge from the gods, and used it to create men, elf and dwarf, as well as the other intelligent species of the Earth. The gods were not happy with this insult to their power, and started a terrible.
The war lasted more than 40 years. It shattered the land and boiled the seas. The vengeful gods destroyed all they came across, but the ancients managed to elude their grasp. Nevertheless, this was not a war they could win, and in the end a brave hero rose from among them. He challenged to Gods, and with clever trickery he managed to defeat them. Using their own power, he destroyed their physical forms, locked their spirits into the planes above and spread their essence thourough the world. Yet this was not without repercussion. In their final moment of power, the Gods uttered a terrible curse, shattering the ancient race and locking their spirits in their creations, both intelligent, and none. And so the dragons and other terrible monsters came into existence.
A shattered world (as in flying parts of the planet, ranging from small islands to the size of entire subcontinents). You got dragons and much other mythological beings present. The world is still divided by the ancient conflict between the Gods and the Ancient. The first have tight control of a rather small, but heavily civilized area, while the ancients influence is limited to the Badlands outside and some cults between the borders.
Magic exists, and is gathered from 3 possible sources. Either divine aid, aid from the ancients, or magical crystals/potions/others stuff, which are rare.
Magic inside the cilivized area is heavily controlled, being a privilige of the church (though several small citystates have revolted against that). Outside that area, it's more being capable than being allowed that counts.
General tech level is semimedieval to steam age. Gunpowder and other explosives exist, but gunarms aren't that effective yet. Industrialization is limited to the center of the civilized area, and even there factories are rare and often governement controlled.
Transport is either by tamed beasts (ancients), spells (ancients) or giant selfpropelled Zeppelins, kept aloft either by hot air, wood of magical trees(goes up when on fire) or magical stones(idem).
