I haven't found a really nice completely straight epic hero high fantasy journey where the hero goes out to slay a dragon. I might have to write one someday. I'd suppose that I'd carefully modify St. George, just because he's my patron saint.

I second the importance of the Hobbit, Ender's Game, and TKAM. I didn't mind the last Narnia book anymore than I did the rest of the series (although it's been a long time since I read 'em). I specifically remember *not* liking Golden Compass, but that was a heckuva long time ago, before fighting the supernatural with mundane means became a major part of my psyche.


I'll recommend Red Storm Rising, like I normally do, *the* book on conventional NATO-USSR WWIII.

Edit: No wait, after reading the article again I noticed that the second sequel may be split into two books. A prequel (how can you turn a sequel into a prequel?) and a sequel.

If one was to have a sequel in the form of a frame story with a character describing some events, especially if they're being revealed to the world at large, removing the framing device (which is occurring after the trilogy) would allow the actual content to be Prequel, sequel, or parallax.

The thing is, the beginning is a bit dry, and I am almost afraid to ruin my memories from childhood by reading it again.

What do the formites that have read this book say? Is it good enough I should read it again, even at the cost of my a trippy ten year old prospective?

Or is it not in fact a good book and I will only ruin my memories of it by reading it?

I reread the series a couple years ago, well actually I was reading the Amber Spyglass for the first time, and I gotta say the first book held up especially well. So yeah, you should go ahead and reread it.

It's remarkably well written prose for a children's book.

Has anyone read the Romance Of the Three Kingdoms books? I've heard they're a good read.

Yeah.  They are interesting, but the writing style is pretty hard to work through.  There are about 400~ characters mentioned and it gets pretty hard to remember who is who sometimes. 

My favorite bit though is when Cao Cao was traveling and asked to stay the night at a hunters house.  The hunter couldn't get any meat(I guess he was a lousy hunter) so he chopped up his wife and fed it to Cao Cao for dinner.  When Cao Cao found out, he was so honored that someone would murder and then feed him a person that he arranged for the guy to get a big rice shipment.  (or something like that)

As for the whole saga, it's not a "fun" read. You really need to be into the Chinese history, legends and culture, to draw any sort of pleasure from it.
