They're both fun, preference I guess. I played through on good my very first game, and then ran through as an evil char. It's been years, but I remember getting a kick out of some of the evil dialog choices.

IIRC Baldur's Gate is lacking in "good" evil quests. Not as lacking as KOTOR(albeit KOTOR's evil ending was really cool), but lacking nonetheless.

Every time I create a character in Baldur's gate it somehow ends up as a chaotic good ranger. Sort of like how I can't get myself to play the "evil" path in KoTOR.

This is what happened to me in both of the Dragon Age games. No matter what my intentions were when I started a new game, I'd always crumble and make a "good guy" sword and board warrior. In Dragon Age 2 being a tank wasn't NEARLY as fun.. so after playing halfway through I just restarted as a "bad guy" mage. Oops, going off of thread topic here.

I would say good, as everything is cheaper when you have a high reputation.

I found that playing the game as a Paladin with the paladin sword (Hallowed Redeemer?) was pretty much easy-mode.
Fun and straight to the monster-bashing point. Also, although it can be fun to play evil BG1 & 2 are mostly built for good characters. Especially BG1

Baldur's Gate games are oriented on neutral and good characters, but being evil is rewarding too. Especially in BG2, where you can even join evil factions.

Especially in BG2, where you can even join evil factions.

Make that singular. Unless you count the evil cleric stronghold. And you're still railroaded right back onto the heroic path after a couple of quests with said evil faction.

Beign evil does not pay in BG1. I mean slaughtering-evil, not lying-evil. Endless swarms of guards will spawn to kill you in each city. Also the toughest enemy in game is a good guy.

In BG2 beign evil does pay.

The series have more options for good characters - evil characters, if you play them as evil, will miss out on a lot of sidequest plot hooks, but that is onyl if you try to roleplay as an evil character.

Of course, alignment has practically no effect on what you can and cannot do in-game. A character with an evil alignment can still choose to help all the damsels in distress as much as a character with a good alignment. In most dialog, there tend to be three choices - paragon of virtue, neutral, and sociopath. It's better in BG2 than BG1, but I would reccoment good/neutral for your first playthrough.

The only in-game effects of alignment are as such:
-Lots of cleric spells have good/evil counterparts that good/evil clerics get. Neutral clerics get both versions
-The cleric specific sidequest has some variations (they're pretty much the same, but with different themes)
-A couple of NPCs will have slightly different lines
-Some equipment has alignment restrictions (like a good-only two-hander, and evil-only longsword
-I do not believe your lawful/chaotic alignment has effects, though.

Heh, I didn't want to spoil that. But yeah, the story is quite one-sided. But nothing stops you from doing ebil :). It looks like GM who tries to lead a campaign he has in mind no matter what.

Yep, I was GM in many campaigns where I didn't have time to write a complex plot sidebranches while I spent a lot of time perfectioning the "good" line, so once my players started to act stupid and greedy, I punished them here and there so they had to stick to the "good party" label. It's not a good move, but I've never claimed I am a good GM :P.

Heh. A good D&D game is one which can have any type of party. Still... I have never really played table top D&D so I don't really know anything..

Well based on my current Icewind Dale run Paladins are very very nice.  (I'm running 2 paladins, 2 clerics, 1 fighter/thief, and 1 fighter dualed to mage (conjurer) at lv 2.)  Still it seems like this game will warrant multiple play troughs based on what I'm hearing.  As far as weapons, how about axes?  I'm enjoying my axe paladin in IWD.

Also big important question.
Where can I get new character pictures to use for my PC in Baldur's Gate?

I remember from my test plays that the basic pictures were ugly ugly ugly.  I'd much rather character pictures like those in Icewind Dale (which I think I can import as a last resort if needed).

If not under Neotemplar look for Vellum.
