I remember quite liking Rise of Nations. It got a little wacky in the "modern era supertech" shenanigans at times, though.

Rise of Nations is Civilization meets real time. Literally, unless I'm mistaken it was made by some of the Civ II/III's devs (can't remember which now). It also had an interesting campaign system, with Risk-style maps where individual battles were fought in RTS mode.

I'd forgotten about the Risk mode. It was really fun because you could move the armies around like actual armies and get reinforcement bonuses for a regular mission. I.e. moving an army into a poorly developed border territory with support from another army meant you could rush with your opening units and rout the enemy immediately, most of the time. Lots of fun.

I noticed it had onw flaw on thatm ode tho. Since you were gived a strict time limit (30 minutes i believe) and an army at the begining of the match all you had to do was bumrushing the enemy if he didn't have any army stationed nearby because while you have a full army he only has a bunch of structures.
And even when he has an army in the privince he rarely uses it effectively by spreading it out.

Also Rise of Nations has a Steampunk relative called Rise of legends and a cousin Empire Earth 2 (don't count 3... ever since it went Command and Conquer grade wacky).

Also there were 2 things that made the game wacky with the supertech.
AI that made units produce INSTANTLY and Superpower that changed your fighters and bombers into stealth variants... bith are perfectly visible mind you but stealth bombers cannot be attacked by ground AA (so you can only use jets) and stealth jets cannot be attacked by other aircraft (only ground AA) meaning that if both players have that... yeah shenenigans.

Also there's a sale on "Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition". This is no doubt due to their recent dropping of "Games for Windows Live" which is closing soon.

Only issue with this is I don't know how they're dealing with the new version of Street Fighter IV that's coming out. I think it's going to be a free upgrade for those who already own "Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition" but I haven't checked that detail since about mid last year.

The upgrade to Ultra Street Fighter IV will not be free, instead owners of Arcade Edition and Super will have the option of paying a discounted price.
The reason it's on sale now is so Capcom can scrape more money before a better version releases, and then make additional money on those who upgrade.

I love Covert Action. For some reason I really like the case-by-case generation and world-building that goes on and how masterminds appear until you have caught them. For me it's like the ultimate James Bond simulator.

I think that it should really have a remake, but one that stays true to the roots. If I'd know how, I would do it.
It would just need a modern control scheme (as in, mouse+keyboard support, not press X to win) and updated graphics.
The character could also move more smoothly during the combat minigames and I have never understood the damn driving minigame :P
Oh, well, yeah, the driving minigame was kind of not very intuitive. The other three were cool, though. I kinda liked the movement, it was slower and promoted cover interestingly much for such an old game.
We'll need a mass of quicktime events when messing with security, dodging and such for stealth as we get into wiretapping and bugging vehicles and such. Not as much necessary, than to just bug people who hate QT events.

You must also have replenishing health.

Actually a quirky touch of Cover Action is that after every mission you hook up with a girl and the hotness of that girl and the location where you meet depends on how well you did.

That last gobbo would stand there, missing an arm, punctured in a kidney, liver, and spleen, fading in and out of consciousness at the far end of where the drawbridge would go, and his last sight would be the drawbridge dropping down and smashing him like a bug.

God DAMN I love this game!

I'd like to see what kind of game someone could make using RPGMaker's free weekend. :P

Also, I miss the old title. Why you gotta go changing things?!

New round of weeklong sales on Steam.

A few interesting ones (that I don't and/or didn't play), but a particular item caught my eye. Earth 2150 Trilogy, all three games, for some ludicrously low price. I got for like half a dollar at the current rates, so the actual price is probably around $1.49. Of course, they're no longer the awesome games they were back when they were new, but they're probably still the only olden RTS games besides Total Annihilation that I still like.

Is that Jagged Alliance remake any good? I remember a ton of rage when it was released but it's hard to tell the difference between actual suckiness and unreasonable wailings of fanboys.
A few other games look interesting but I already picked them up during GoG spring sale.

The remake is okay, nothing more and nothing less. If it didn't have the Jagged Alliance brand, it would be a decent game - but you expect far more than it delivers because of the name.

Incidentally, there's an actual Jagged Alliance game being made at the moment and is available on Steam Early Access - it's by the dudes who made JA2 and they're keen to stay true to the values of the originals.

My problem with the remake is it focuses on the RTS bit too much (there isnt a turned base mode) and the modding community doesn't exist cause the developer bailed out early.

I enjoy it. It's not amazing or anything, but if you can get it for a decent price it can be good fun.

Definitely better after they patched it to include things like fog of war. So some of the initial complaints aren't really an issue any more.
