Important Fortress Features to Build?
« on: March 04, 2011, 07:19:03 pm »

I'm curious to know about what important features that you put in your fortress that serve a functional purpose but aren't "a building".

Things like:
Garbage Chute
Swimming Pool
Danger Room
Arena

I feel like there are a lot more that are out there that I don't know about.

I always like to build a large gatehouse that acts as my freshly chopped wood stockpile and airlock for what gets in and out of my main entrance. Seems to keep things in order nicely. Always make it two stories so I can have my marksdwarf squads rain down boney bolty death at trapped invaders.

Burning and raping the land is recreational. Where business is concerned, though, sustainability is the name of the game.

The danger room is a staple so my militia gets SOME skillups and doesn't get butchered by the first goblin they see. I also like to build/dig arenas when a fort has acquired a certain number of prisoners. Temples are one feature I always think would be neat, but never get around to (usually due to boredom). Never tried a swimming pool either, add that to the "should try this" list.

How about waterfalls/mist generators or drowning/magma traps, goblin grinders etc.? GCS silk factories?

Capture some important creature, like a giant or a titan, place it in a guilded gold cage, surrounded by statues and lavish decorations.  It can be made into a statue garden/zoo, but otherwise has no value.

Alternatively, pick a deity, start making statues, and place that deity's statues around in a temple.  Eventually this will actually be required, as dwarves will demand a place of worship, but for now it's only actually valuable as a statue garden and personal flare.

Check out this list which contains some items of the sort you describe:

I usually create a "greenhouse" (without a roof) that doubles as a statue garden, danger room, and a mass cage recycling system above an arena.

Garbage Chute

At the bottom, place an atomsmasher.

That's what I would do.  :)

Pit o' doom, of course.

This. Given the current metal shortage, a 10-level-deep Dodge-Em trap is a standard feature of my recent forts. Once I have enough magma-safe material to assemble it, some sort of Dwarven Doomsday Device for flooding the world with magma is also a standard feature.

What's with all the sudden "dodge-em" talk?  There's like three threads dedicated to something else, and someone still manages to talk about the dodge-em.

I like having lever fields, in which you make dozens of levers and attach random ones to random places
like, one lever will flood the trading post, and another that releases all the animals in the zoo
it's like Russian Roulette
but with dwarves and levers
(I usually do this in succession forts)

Pit traps are metal-cheap (and fun). Many people have recently become metal poor. Also, military usually sucks without a danger room. That, and people are compelled to talk about their new goblin-splatterer.

Not that type of pit!

If you have no metal and no magma-safe pump components, then nice deep Dodge-Em Traps are the Holy Grail of Dwarven survival.
