A thought on power
« on: May 04, 2011, 02:05:50 pm »

Why is it that our mature fortresses all use green energy sources (wind, water, geothermal) if we're so fixated on burning everything and raping the land?

Burning and raping the land is recreational. Where business is concerned, though, sustainability is the name of the game.

Well, I mean, I try to clearcut forests for coal power, but sooner or later I run out of wood anyway, and am forced to return to magma for my forges

Wait, whaaa?

Why wouldn't you just only use magma? Magma is cheap, abundant, renewable, and magma forges don't destroy any!

Why WOULDN'T you go out of your way to clearcut forests?

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Fah. This is DWARF FORTRESS. We can rape and burn the land, and run clean geothermal energy. (Seriously, run your magma stack up to the top of the world and flood the ground with magma and build your forges out on magma-safe constructions. With walk ways connecting them. :D)

Because using green energy is just another human saying for "making nature one's bitch."

When I start getting to this point, I just ask the caravans for wood and they bring me truly absurd amounts of logs.

If there was a way to use coal to replace wind or water power, I'm sure that there would be people who'd insist on doing it.  As it is, there's no way to use non-green power sources for mechanical power.  Although I like to imagine that a properly built dwarven water reactor is somehow an abomination against nature that the elves would condemn if they understood.

I use magma for my forges, but I end up clear-cutting the forest anyway, to make pearlash for clear glass blocks and windows.
