Never said he was a hero...just that most countries you think of being "civilized" wouldn't even apply the death penalty for that.

He committed treason well aware that he was risking his life. He wasn't aware of how little things have changed because of his "sacrifice". Frankly it was just dumb.

Pretty much this. Less because of the treason and more because he was stupid enough to get caught.

The U.S. isn't very different from China.  They just use different methods to achieve the same goals.

China uses direct, iron-fisted information control.  They don't want their people to know something, that knowledge simply disappears and anyone who digs it up again also disappears.  This is a very volatile formula.  Screw it up, and there is nothing you can say or do afterwards.  It just explodes in your face, and you have to clean up the mess.

The U.S. uses marginalization, distraction, and cultivated apathy.  This is a much more resilient methodology.  Information is out there, but nobody pays any attention or they pay attention to the wrong things.  When someone manages to put a bright spotlight on something unfavorable, all the same methods can still be effectively employed in damage control.  Nothing really needs to change.  Plus, you don't look as bad when you can say "So what?  This isn't telling you anything new......." or even go as far as blaming the victims for having the qualities that you cultivated in them.

Honestly, the most interesting thing I've learnt about this whole affair is how goddamn callous and brutal some people can be.  A lot of the rhetoric used on Manning is borderline fascist.

I think, he needs to be left in Iraq. At least one of our 'informants' will be able to take care of him.

If the informant wasn't shot and killed already that is.
I would like a link to a source showing that informants have been put at risk by this, or a source for the reaver drone locations mentioned earlier.  I mean this honestly, as I haven't seen anything like that anywhere (and I've read plenty of 8 page spreads on the subject).

I'm really sorry I come off as brutal. It's because I was raised in a gun friendly environment. I think I need to be rehabilitated.

Borderline fascist? Urist is dead tome called himself a fascist earlier. They are downright fascists.
And that's the new America for you : screw net neutrality, you have Murdoch news network.
To every poeple in America who like it's freedom : if you don't fight right now you're dead.
And to everybody in Europe, same thing. You cannot afford not to care.
But we're slowly getting there in Europe, partly thanks to Manning.

Hell, I'll take responsibility. What do they need someone to do, pull a lever or something?
