You really don't want to give experience points to the guys you plan on sacking, that's the problem.  That includes sending them into UFOs where you might actually want to shoot something.  If you really want them to die, don't even give them rifles!  People that you don't want to keep are ONLY good for absolute emergency situations, like "whoops my base got attacked good thing I had some guys there", or "I lost ALL my good soldiers, I'm broke, and I need to steal some alien loot to sell".

Now, there is one potentially decent use for fodder instead of sacking them.  Got a guy that you want to train in bravery?  Give him a weapon that can't hurt your armor, take the armor off the sacrificial lambs, and make him mow two or maybe three of them down.  (The less leadership on the mission, the better!)  Then let him twiddle his thumbs for a while with a morale around 40-45 (has to be less than 50, but the higher the better) and ten rounds later or so, he has a pretty good chance of getting a bravery skill-up.  It'll be brutal on your score...but if you're about to go to Cydonia and you just realized your star player has a bravery of 10, a little friendly fire might be worth it.

All this discussion on sacking fodder and properly training your recruits fails to see the big picture.  (Although I know the people doing the discussing DO see the big picture.)

It's possible, and not that much harder, to complete the game with a high casualty rate that prevents you from getting any super soldiers.  So, if all these strategies about maximizing experience gain sound useful, go for it.  If it sounds like a lot of extra work, you can beat the game without worrying about it.

Though I think its good to have fodders, maybe as your frontline men, mainly venturing into dangerous areas spotting aliens and getting shot, most of the killing are caused by your elite units, or snipers though.

I've recently had an experience similar to Tarran's, with my first floater terror mission in my new game. Long story short, after trading four of my rookie team for a batch of floaters and two reapers, I'm left with two Rifle-wielding rookies, and by the sounds of it, about three floaters. All civilians but one are already dead. The pair carefully comes to this house at the map's corner, and find themselves deep in, well, poo - as the three floaters converge on them, killing the last civilian somewhere nearby.
Standing right at the house's entrance, the rookies spot a Floater at ground level. The one closest to it fires a burst! Plink-plink-plink... all shots wasted. Another burst and a snapshot later, the soldier has no TUs left and the alien got two hits, still standing. The rookie further back joins in with his own gun. Snapshot! Miss. Okay, I think, now a burst... First of the three bullets hits! The floater is down. Yeah! Second bullet goes elsewhere, third bullet... hits the first rookie in the back. Aiie! "So-and-so has become unconscious". Well, that's not so bad... Rookie flees into the house. End turn... ominous humming from the second floor... "So-and-so has died from a fatal wound". Ah, damn. Oh well.
With nothing else to do, the rookie jams himself between the wall and the fridge, maintaining a look on the door and the outside through the window. End turn... more humming, a floater enters through the door.. and quickly eats a reaction burst. Okay, one down. Since it's a good vantage point, the rookie remains there and waits. Another floater enters through a broken wall... no reaction fire, but the floater doesn't fire as well. Good! A burst on my own turn kills it, and I'm pondering what to do as consecutive turns yield no progress. Thinking a higher ground will give at least scouting opportunity, the rookie heads upstairs... and stares straight into the back of a floater, who stands facing the window. Hmm. Okay, burst fire.. wait, why two shots? Oh, no more ammo. Wait, no ammo at all? The corpse of the other rookie is too far outside, the still-alive floater will probably have a chance to fire. No laser pistol as backup.. strength too low. Mmkay, there's a stunrod. No chance to use it on this turn though, so retreat into the nook behind the fridge and hope the alien doesn't use fridge logic. End turn... nothing happens. Odd. Stunrod in hand, the rookie walks up the stairs and sees the floater, still standing facing the window. What a weird fellow, got two bullets put through him and didn't even wonder where they came from. But alright, let's hope it's the last one... and stun successful, end mission. Rookie promoted to Sergeant! The final score was in the minus hundred range, for getting five agents and nine civilians killed, but we wouldn't be X-Com if we didn't consider this an acceptable price for 11 dead and 1 live alien... right?

Just leaving this here.
UFO:The two sides.

These guys are redrawing all the original art at double the resolution. Which is nice. Though I don't care much for some of the base tiles. They somehow lost their charm.

I'm loving it. You need to have a copy of XCOM on hand for the unsprited things to not be purple squares, and cydonia is not in yet, but it's still pretty neat.

I've killed every alien and civilian I can find, and waited for a hundred turns, but the round still won't end, and the "hidden movement" is extremely fast, like there is no movement at all! Is this a bug or am I just blind?

Probably a single little gray or something, sitting in a corner panicking every round. Hate when it happens. Especially when it happens in TFTD shipping lane terror missions. All those little nooks and crannies. GAH!

On a regular UFO terror site, line your troops up and perform a map sweep. Sooner or later you should find the little bugger. Got lasers? Go nuts on all the walls to clear as much vision block as possible.

but don't destroy stairs unless you have flying suits, unless you are absolutely sure that there is nothing on the second/third floor.
otherwise, you may have alians on the map that you can't reach.
destroying stairs after checking a building is, however, a good idea... would keep at least part of the building clear.

if you have the needed resources on site, just throw alien grenades/rockets/high explosives/blasters bombs(this last one is ideal) everywhere. Eventually, you will kill anything.

It'll be brutal on your score...but if you're about to go to Cydonia and you just realized your star player has a bravery of 10, a little friendly fire might be worth it.

The training method you just described is essentially forcing a soldier to execute innocent people at point-blank range until they become completely desensitized to murder and violence. Just in case I forgot what forum I was on. :D

Is it playable now? I mean, the single player campaign at least?

Nnnnope, that's pretty much exactly what it is.  "Horrors of war?  Damn straight I'll give you horrors of war"  :D

...I am not so fond of the new Two Sides sprites.  They seem to have forgotten that a playable game needs blockiness (to tell where the tiles are) and an easy distinction between the sprites and the background.  Their sprites kind of blend in.  :/

Super stars are great, but I've never had a problem letting them come out on their own. When you do have one, the BEST BEST BEST way to train them is to have them gun down mind controlled aliens.

Saddly we have fully derailed this tread. I think the OP has stopped playing and all the unOPs have started again.

Worse derails have happened.

I have to admit that I generally play on Beginner, and I think I'm going to have to start over on at least the second difficulty level...

Beginner!? I play on superhuman with no saving. I beat it but that was before I knew about the difficulty bug.
