Also a part of the story is that AM, - the computer who says that, and the main antagonist - cannot leave the confines of his complex, which is a part of the reason for his rage. I'm sure there's a nerd-stuck-in-his-basement joke to be made somewhere, but I really can't be bothered making inflammatory jokes now.

Never rely on someone's ability to get a literary reference. And honestly, I'd be surprised if there were many people here who had read Dangerous Visions let alone any of Ellison's actual work.

I read the book (awful teacher, he) when I was in middle school and I don't think my feeble middle school mind could comprehend it (and I sure don't remember much of it). I could have sworn I last heard that phrase on MSPA, though. Hmm.
