None of my friends know I even play.
As a 16 year old I don't think I'd get much respect for playing DF.

You'd probably be surprised.  When I was in high school, if I had been playing DF I could have roped in like ALL of my guy-friends into playing, and we could compare achievements.  After all, what teenage boy doesn't enjoy a good goblin slaughter?  Sadly when I was in HS, DF would have barely been playable, much less the glorious weaponization race it is today.

Actually, Highschool may be the best time to try and get them interested! Alot of teenage boys will like the idea of a game that allows you to slaughter an army and use their remains to slaughter another one, the people who don't will enjoy the architectural aspect, and the more peaceful can always enjoy a relaxing city sim on an island.

The only issue here is graphics, and if you can manage to get them really interested, they'll at least try to struggle through. My friend is at that point now, asking me occassionally about how my fortress is doing, even though he doesn't play. I may or may not exaggerate what I do in game though... (my fort is in a period of total peace and prosperity. Good for the dwarves, not so good for a story...)

Just throw hir a link to Boatmurdered.  If they don't want to play after that, they probably never will. :D

Anybody who dosn't want to play after boatmurdered has some issues. You know, come to think of it, I have never played a 2D version of DF, and I want to now. Anybody know the latest release that didn't have a third dimention?

Once I left arena mode up and my 11 year old sister comes in and sits down. She's seen enough to know how to play the game so she spawns an elf with no skills what so ever, no clothes, and just a bronze dagger I believe. So then she spawns a legendary human wrestler/biter. Then she proceeds to cripple the elf by breaking every limb, gouging its eyes, and pinching both ears off. She duel wields the ears and proceeds to beat it to death with ITS OWN EARS.

When I asked her why she did that she said:

"Well that's what you always do in Dwarf Murder Simulator"

I cried from laughing.

She just killed her first dragon in adventure mode. She killed it with a demon* tooth she knocked out herself.

* I think it was demon tooth

I don't let her play Genesis for 2 reasons:

I want her to learn dwarf fortress in ASCII

I don't want to get in trouble because there are sexual organs in Genesis

Well does her mother object to her learning DF?
If not, best mother ever.  :D

There's sex organs in Genesis?  That may prompt me to look at it then...  I feel DF has ultimately lacked nutshots recently.  I've never seen "Urist McLegendaryKicker+5 kicks Goblin Bowman in the groin, fracturing the pelvis and shoving the spine into the brain!  Goblin Bowman has been struck down!"

@ Ultimuh: Most likely would

But she's already learned many life skills like:

How to murder elves
Throwing rocks at people often enough can make you more deadly than a tank
Don't go outside at night alone
Don't go night swimming

Those are just a few

@Girlinhat:

Oh yeah and its makes the game overall better
