Panzer General Forever 1.0
« on: February 21, 2011, 11:30:44 pm »

In short, fan remake of the ol' Panzer General 1 SSI games-turn by turn hex based WW2 strategy at its finest!

Note:above picture is from the original version :)

See, the meat is campaign mode-you fight through WW2, building up your Core units, which carry over with you when you complete a mission, bringing their experience with them. Your currency here is "Prestige", awarded for big victories, taking cities and destroying enemy units, and spent buying and reparing units. Doing better on missions get you major victories, which give you more prestige, and the occasional "bonus" mission-for example, doing good in Poland gets you the chance to invade Norway! (not an easy mission that one...)
Preformance in the campaign determines how the war goes-blitzing France quickly allows you to get a shot at invading Britain and knocking them out earlier in the war, and doing good in the early Russian campaign allows you to convince Hitler to go straight for Moscow!
Of course, the ultimate goal is to invade Washington D.C itself...

Also includes Allied General (if you wanna play the good guys) and WW1 scenarios.

Heres a link to the creators thread. The ZIP is in the first post

http://panzercentral.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=45039

Feel free to use this as a tip/question thread, which you'll probably understand more after you play.

-Check your unit stats-soft and hard attack correspond to soft and hard units, which means infanty and light vehicles/tanks.

-Don't play on the harder difficulties unless you want to die. Really.

-Elite replacements should always be used for core units, as normal replacements dilute experience.

-Build up those fighters! Having air superiority is great, at least when the weather holds...

-Other than fighters, you've got 2 types of bombers-Tactical Bombers, like Stukas and Marauders, damage the enemies strength directly-a few good strikes can turn a tank division into scrap. Strategic bombers, like the B-52, don't kill the enemy *directly*, but lower their ammuniton and fuel reserves and supress them, making, for the turn a part of the unit unable to fight, making it likely you will force a retreat. Good for blasting cities and fixed defense points! Strat bombers are also nice at killing naval ships.

-Use tanks to wreck anything in the open, and infantry to dig out defenders in cities.  Remember, tanks are vulnerable to anti-tank guns, which will ALWAYS hit them first if the tank attacks it-anti-tank guns can't attack you by themselves without suffering the same problem, though.

-Artillery comes in two types-towed and self propelled-they can hit enemies at range, and fire on any enemy that attacks one of your units adjacent to them. They tear apart infantry.

-Towed artillery usually does more damage, but needs a turn to unload from its transport to fire, leaving it vulnerable and unable to defend adjacent units. Self propelled artillery can move alongside your units, and doesn't have those limits, but some of the earlier models have ammo and fuel problems, and are not as strong.

-Infantry Units come in a few flavors-the standard infantry and heavy, plus paratroopers and engineers. Engineers are good for assaulting enemy towns because of high attack and the fact they won't incur a "rugged defense" which sometimes happens when attacking entrenched enemies, and is bad.

-Remember terrain!
Rivers are annoying! A unit trying to pass a river without a bridge (or bridge building unit) has to stop, then move onto the river before it can move past, and is vulnerable to any attack.
Mountains, forests and Rough are difficult for tanks to move through, but offer nice entrenchment bonuses to infantry. Swamps, Mountains, Rough, forests etc also cap intiative levels, allowing infantry to possibly get the first shot against normally faster moving tanks.

I remember my dad playing this game.

It's like learning to play DF all over again...  I don't understand why my units keep dying, and everyone's running out of ammo with no apparent way of getting more.  The mission I tried also had a turn limit, so that made it even harder.  I just don't have enough time patience to invest to learn to play another complex game.

Looks cool, though.  I'll have to get back to it some day.

Ah Panzer General.  Now there's a game that doesn't screw around.  It just kicks your ass while simultaneously making you keep coming back for more.

At least that's my experience with it.

10 turns is ridiculous.

I suffered much the same...till I realized you could skip the non-vital city in the middle with your tanks and hit the one at the end-that's usually chock with ats and artillery later, in 2-3 turns. Just don't get distracted trying to take cities that are out of your way. Speed is everything-the more turns the enemy gets, the more they can build...of course, it's a tricky opening scenario, since you don't have planes...

Also, turn the difficulty down-at the highest level, it's got enough brains to use the corners of the map as chokepoints. :(

Also, playing Anzio last night has given me a new love for the M-10...love destroying attacking Panther units in one shot lol

I remember my dad playing this game.

Well, clicking on the button with the 3 little drums resupplies units, but you can't resupply fully if an enemy unit is adjacent to you-you can get some supplies from a reinforcement.

Also, units tend to die if you don't pay attention to the matchups-tanks fail against at, infantry fail against tanks in the open, and also tend to take heavier losses, though their cheaper to replace...

to anyone else, you might wanna start the British or American campaign-you get full units, and time limits and difficulty is less. Soviet campaign is crazy hard though.
You might get a bad impression if you just suck at Poland lol :P

Whoa, nice. I remember playing this game quite a lot. And being quite, quite bad at it. I could usually get through the first two poland scenarios ok, but France and the low countries? They handed me my ass, every time.

welp, thanks for the advice, I got past poland in 8 turns, then the other map of poland was easier.

The invasion of norway....
I lost sooo many ships and subs, but i won it, and i sunk a carrier! ^_^ Who needs ships anyways, in a panzer themed game lol. However, this one made the first 2 seem very easy, the allies have a huge fleet supporting the city in the north so your pretty much boned with infantry attacks half the time. I had to bring up my entire fleet and knock out a few heavy cruisers, and kill the carrier which i think kept launching dive bombers at my tanks and infantry and raping them.

After that fleet was gone, it was mopup and i finished with a "minor" victory with 4 turns left. I dont know how the hell your supposed to get a Major victory here, the map is huge and Norway has a massive army after too long , so once again you gotta rush through with tanks/recon cars (recon cars are awesome btw for infantry/arty killing)

if you take too long the city in the middle of norway leading to one of the required to capture cities in the north will be ridiculously defended and youll waste too many turns knocking it out.

Also, do not waste your paratroopers, the allies kill your transport planes with fighters if you send them in too far :( I just dropped them safely at some coastal city, then put them in a transport ship and moved them up north after i kept losing them in advanced drops way ahead of my forces :(

Do not underestimate the use of mobile artillery in this one, since the final 2 cities are heavily garrisoned, artillery rips apart any infantry it can hit so buy like 3 arty pieces with cars to follow the troops, it works well there on the last bit.

Invading the low countries into france

I am now invading the low countries into France and having a good time now that a have a few pioneer infantry to take out cities in 2 turns by themselves usually. I have had 3 recon cars since Norway, and they run out scouting and killing any infantry that arent in a city. Great units.

Im currently on turn 9 of this battle and im like half way across the map, so looks like im about set for winning this with a few turns left to spare again. Hopefully its a major victory however, minor victories dissapoint me.

god they are awesome.

Norway, you just have to drop most of your units on the North shores, and RUSH your entire naval fleet up North. They can distract the Brits fleet long enough for your units to slowly slog through the forest and hit that city. Suffice to say your air power is needed-most of the Brit battleships I took care of with strategic bombers.

See, taking the lower half of the map also makes the allies spend reinforcements down there instead of turtling. I got a major in Norway cause they kept producing infantry units at some non-vital city I neglected to take. Right into my panzers and stukas...I majored on that.

Yes, your tanks are gonna have it easy in France...but watch out for the, hmm, British Matilda II it's got nothing going for it but impressive ground defense. Held up my entire armored advance as my Panzer IV's plinked uselessly away at it-shades of the nightmare you'll face in Russia lol- so even after it ran out of ammo, it wouldnt DIE! I only got minors in both French scenarios, and couldn't invade Britain...yet.

:(

Say, Recon cars are great for taking out weakened units. I have at least one with 5 stars of experience, he does great against infantry!

recon cars are my favorite units in the game now.

Finished the invasion of the low countries, I ran through there easily with 5 turns to spare as i stuka'd the last defenders on a coastal city to death.

I ran so fast that half my units ended up out of fuel like 10 hex's from the last city and i was like oh god i might not win.

first time experiencing fuel shortage ^_^

fun fun.

Bought myself some mobile artillery for the invasion of france into paris, figure itll clear the enemy fast.
