Has anyone ever played a game that had a simulated ecosystem?
« on: February 11, 2011, 03:14:29 pm »

I can't help but wonder about the idea.  It sounds incredibly hard to balance, but I would love to see a dynamic ecosystem made up of fantastic creatures.  Google searches have only tuned up kids games or really old games that aren't supported anymore (I can't get them to work anyhow).

Bit old, but SimEarth was pretty much a planet simulator. It even took things like the greenhouse effect into account. No fantastic creatures, though (unless you gave a primitive life form sentience anyway). And it may look a bit abstract by today's standards.

Ryzom had it, sort of. Which is interesting for a MMO.

Star Wars Episode I: The Gungan Frontier did it pretty decently. Just looking at it now reminds me of how long ago the Star Wars prequels were made, though. :')

There comes a time when you must take off the soft, furry slippers of a boy and put on the shoes of a man.
Unless of course they don't fit properly and your feet blister up like bubble wrap.
Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.
Especially if that fat pig Tony is at the desk.

Spore (UUUGH!)
Simearth
Simsafari (The problem I have with this game is nature NEVER reaches homostasis... How did the environment survive before you got there?)

Wow, that looks really cool.  I only wish they had a version for mac.  :(

I don't believe the ecosystem is at all dynamic until you're in space.  I guess it was possible to cause extinction, but I wasn't really that impressed by the 'ecosystem' in spore.

Evolution.

Protip: Ignore GameSpot review. I am just linking you to it because I didn't find other websites describing the game and showing the CD cover, given how generic the title was.

Evolution was AWESOME.  It also took like four hours to play a multiplayer game with someone.

...Worth it.

And yeah, SimLife, though it was horribly simplistic...  EDIT, although it DID make a great teaching tool for carefully directed experiments.  A lot of early Sim games were really good for this.  The book suggested that you could study natural selection by using the Smite tool on critters that you saw running in straight lines, and sure enough, after a few generations they all ran in circles.

Severe lack of ecosystems abound, so I don't think it even comes close to qualifying.

I second the creatures games, they may look kidish but they're very good.

I never got creatures. People say its complex and scientific. All I see is retards desperately trying to play with a ball. and failing.
