Strip mine the layers above hell and cover them in cave in traps. A diamond lattice of single supports with a floor tile on top will instantly kill any building destroyer. Once all the original inhabitants are dead, the pathing goes back to normal, like HFS was never breached.

Currently all the invaders are contained in a network of long, one tile wide probing tunnels that I was (unwisely) digging to find more cotton candy deposits.

Cave-ins, as I understand, breach unsupported floor below them. Would it, then, be possible to cause a cave-in on these tunnels from a few Z-levels above them without actually having to dig into them myself or otherwise release the invaders again? Also, I estimate there are about 80 of them, so I think victory in battle may not be possible.

Make a large room nearby (above) your tunnels that has a ceiling rigged to fall when a lever is pulled in your main fort. Put lots of bait animals and statues in this room. Allow the HFS access to this room, but not your main fort. Once they enter the trap, crush all of them.

HFS respawns.  Unlike normal wildlife that has a limit to the amount per biome, HFS is infinite.  The only way to remove them is to wall up the edges of the map.

Yes. But once the initial horde is defeated it should be much easier to take them one by one while workers diligently seal up the place.

The ability to set a guard order would help here, but sadly your men won't follow someone without killing them.  You may try and make one mason (or carpenter, or whatever) and giving him a dozen war elephants, so that he'll have something of a real escort as he goes down.  Put military on patrol around the work zone, keep them active and slaughtering.

Also, the roaming HFS doesn't try to actively path to your dwarves. They roam like wild animals until they see your dwarves, then pursue.

This also means that hunters will hunt the HFS.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

Which is why I don't have hunters. If Operation Longshot (as I have now termed it) succeeds, we might just seal up the shaft if the max number of spawned HFS at one time is limited. Since they won't actively pursue Dorfs, simple floors should be sufficient, no?

There is a utility that lets you decompress your save, and edit the hidden raws. Some people on the SA forums found that if you remove the BUILDINGDESTROYER:2 tag they stop hurting your FPS so badly.

Well, the project was going nicely, but it seems some (presumably spawned) demons ended up in the magma pools They came up through the magma forges. I was initially able to hold them off, but in the second wave my hammerdwarves all dodged into the magma. At this very moment demons are rampaging up the mineshafts, rending Dwarves to pieces as they go.

The blood. OH GOD, SO MUCH BLOOD!!

Didn't know they can fly through magma, huh?  You have now experienced Fun.  Side effects may include disgruntled attitude, anger, urge to do it better next time, OH GOD MY SKIN IS BEING RIPPED OFF!, and mild hallucinations.  Please consult a doctor after experiencing Fun.

I guess I did know. I knew they could survive magma, but I was unaware of any way they could have accessed the magma pools. I had noticed them floating around in the magma for quite some time, but they seemed pretty benign, like they were of the "non-pursuing" variety. Perhaps spawned in the magma after the initial breach. In any case, all that's left are two Dwarves I accidentally walled of in the caverns, but they're too stricken to do anything but stand there, not even collect the edible mushrooms littered -everywhere-. So now all I can do is wait for them to starve because they refuse to do anything.

One of them is the new "mayor". now that everyone else is dead. He has mandated the construction of one ballista arrow. Perhaps he wants to have a crack at HFS himself?

You didn't make your fortress airtight. Your fortress should be completely surrounded with indestructible structures (like raised drawbridges). You really need only two things from the outside world: water and magma. Both are liquids and need to be put into a reservoir by using a carved fortification at the edge and a drawbridge behind it. Once your reservoir fills with magma, just close the drawbridge and you will be airtight. You'll need to refill your water reservoirs so just open the drawbridge occasionally to let in more water. Keep it closed at all other times. That and the carved fortification should keep you forever protected. Never just punch a hole in the ground over a natural magma pool and build a magma forge over it.

If you make sure the impassible part is over the hole it should technically be impossible to break through. Since you cant destroy things from a z lvl below it and cant go up though the impassible terrain. It always works for me. Well, there was that one time a fire snake magically started running around everywhere.
