"Mount and blade in space" is a great way to describe the game in 5 words or less (I'm partial to "pew pew pew 2D spaceships" as well.)

It's a lot smaller scale than M&B, and a lot less finished too. Combat is really fun and the mechanics all work well, but the campaign side of things is less well fleshed out. I suppose that's to be expected with a game still in alpha.

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

M&B in space is great because M&B was one of the first early access games. I remember buying 0.27 or something like that back in the days of yore for 15 euros or the like. It paid itself hundredfold through excellent development and fabulous mods.

Yeah, that's a fair assessment. The other was what I meant when I said that it was less arcade-y; there's all the deeper RPG elements and combat is less 'press the buttons' and more tactical.

One thing I was having a bit of trouble with on the tutorial: When it prompts you to strafe the target, noting that it will follow the front of your ship with the cursor, allowing you to keep a bead on the enemy.

Is the above still applicable? I was able to make a close approximation via the Q and E keys, but it didn't seem quite as precise.

Hold shift.

Thank you! I don't believe I remember reading that in the tutorial.

I think the default keybindings may have changed several versions back and the tutorial was never updated.

Loadsa blog entries this month (3 new ones, 4 total for April). It's a relief to see these, since I do have a lot of probably unreasonable hopes for this game being the proverbial tits, which get squashed during the droughts. Plus they're always a fun read.

Sensors, abilities, and transponders. Mostly stuff relating to moving around in the campaign. At first I thought it was kind of boring stuff, but then I started thinking about making a zippity-zoopity stealth fleet, for ambushing rich saps and taking their space ducats before they can even run away.

Picked this up and playing with the starsector+ mod.  Is there any other goal besides accruing lots of money to build up a fleet?  Can I influence any factions or merc for them?  Is there any large lurking evil faction that shows up later down the line?

1. Depends if you're playing Nexelerin or not.
2. See 1.
3. Install the Knights Templar mod. It's a Boss Faction.

The game is still not quite finished and so far the only thing resembling an endgame is bounty hunting.
However some mods might have something akin to an evil faction poping up later (i'm quite sure Ironclads had aliens)

As for factions and warfare it's not yet finished. You can still have some impact if you destroy trade fleets transporting important thingies but from what i know that's still in development and the only real comodity affected is food.
Other than that i think you get good standing with a faction for killing their enemy and that unlocks you more stuff to buy from the military stocks

Missions are bound to appear later versions (along with persistant NPC's and officers).

Cool, thanks for the replies.  Looks like starsector vanilla+ mod with nexelerin fulfills most of the things I want.

A new version is out.
Quote
New features in this version:

Expanded battles – come to the aid of beleaguered allies, or be swarmed by enemies
Campaign terrain – nebulas, stellar coronas, hyperspace storms, and more
Sensors – play cat and mouse games with enemy fleets or patrols seeking to ruin your smuggling run
Abilities – “go dark” to hide in a ring system, or use “emergency burn” to chase down a pirate
Combat officers – hire and level up officers to power up the ships you assign them to
Campaign missions to take on for profit
Faction and reputation-specific music
Six new star systems, five new ships, and three new weapons
