Yeah, and you posted it all. I'm afraid this thread isn't cut out for interactiveness, which is why few people answer it, but I'm sure I'm not the only lurker.

Probably, though its difficult to be interactive when very few readers know the game, and there just isnt room/time to do much of the usual "fancy" stuff. Like jokingly sending carriers to West Coast or other high-value asset toying, just for the laughs, and then royally screw up something.

Which in a way make it even more interesting to read. I'm starting to get a bit tired of silly games.

Long time lurker! Just enjoy reading how your war is going because I highly doubt I'd ever be able to get past a few turns in this game let along defeat an entire nation :)

And I agree with the silly games comment!

Yeah, I can't really suggest any options besides the few strategic bits of advice. This is really fun to watch, though.

I dont think, as a game, the WitP:AE is more difficult than many others, such as some flight sims, chess, or Dwarf Fortress without traps and sealing up your fort.

But what makes it vastly even more thrilling is the need to consider things well into the future. What are my strategic goals for a certain period of time? How do I achieve them? What do I have available and how do I use my assets? What do I have at risk, what can I risk more, what I have to gain?

Knowing you're risking the near-monumental physical representations of your entire nation's strength (near-irreplaceable carriers, battleships and cruisers) really makes you think how to use them. There are never too many buttons on the board, so never risk more than you can lose.  ;)

Being the Commander in Chief isnt easy!

Yeah, I can't really suggest any options besides the few strategic bits of advice. This is really fun to watch, though.

I'll now have 2 weeks to think through the strategic situation(or a week once I'm back from Germany).

Things to consider:

1) Asia. Keep up the advance in China with current units, or reinforce? Reinforce Burma instead, try to break-through in the mountainous jungles, or dig trenches?
2) DEI/SOPAC: where to expect the first Allied counter attack? Now it looks like its going to be up the Solomons... Dig, or advance? Is conquering the whole area possible, or is battle of attrition more favorable?
3)MIDPAC, NOPAC - I dont think the Allies will come before they have carriers(heh), but fortifying Tarawa already
4) production - can we, and is it feasible, to build all the carriers? Building all the carriers accelerated at the cost of the few CLs, and submarines? Build vast plane reserves now(for more leisure and, say, later kamikaze use) or spare to later produce more of better aircraft, to keep industrial capacity up for longer?

I agree that one of the main attractions of this AAR is that it isn't silly like so many others.

Definitely build more carriers. The main point of the late war is how US carrier forces prevailed over the japanese, after the japanese lost their carriers. Now that it's flipped the other way, I would suggest building more carriers so you can have multiple mobile task forces that can easily hit allied troops and navies.

Back from Bavaria.

Definitely build more carriers. The main point of the late war is how US carrier forces prevailed over the japanese, after the japanese lost their carriers. Now that it's flipped the other way, I would suggest building more carriers so you can have multiple mobile task forces that can easily hit allied troops and navies.

I'm leaning on building all carriers possible, too. If the Allies cannot do full-size amphibious operations (other than short jumps) without a major carrier engagement or potential risk of one, and them not being able to go mano et mano against the Kido Butai, the more bottlenecks we have, and the easier it is to defend those bottlenecks(Burma, Solomons and New Britain, mainly). With carrier superiority, or parity, we are forcing the Allies to commit their entire CV force in just one operation at a time, with still the potential risk of a Kido Butai intervention, severely restricting their options. And not just the available operational and strategic options, but also required resources and strength not just in the "schwerpunkt" but also in other places where the Japanese CV force potentially threatens. The last one including the industrial centers in California and Seattle...

I'm still lurking around. Sad that'll it be a month, but alas, life goes on...

My opponent should be back on the 12th, so one more week.  ;)

Welcome back!

I'm looking forward to seeing how things go. A question on Allied strategy in this situation - where can he build up troops for invasions? Australia seems to be a bad spot due to potential battleship bombardment raids, Hawaii and the West Coast ends up with having to sail a long distance and the potential problems of detection by submarines or air patrols, leading to bomber mania.

Just the Northern coast of Australia is in range of such hit & run raids and Japanese aircraft - the Eastern coast (Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane etc.) is currently far and covered by Port Moresby and Southern Solomon Islands.

In the CENPAC, the number 1 Allied base is Pearl Harbor, then there are Johnston, Canton and Christmas islands. In SOPAC the Allies are probably building up Suva(in Fiji), Noumea(New Caledonia) as well as Baker and Luganville. The problem is not really transporting troops, but keeping those troops supplied and having to bring the fuel over very long distances. For now, it seems that my opponent is having his focus in the Solomons and New Guinea - this is a good area to fight in as both sides have to bring everything by sea over similar distances, favoring the Japanese CV superiority if and when I decide to use it.

Here we go!

July 1st

SOPAC:

Against odds, and my expectations, CL Kashima survives the night, and her escorts manage to put out the fires. She isn in immediate danger of sinking any more, but might still sink during the next 24 hours. Ki-43s will continue providing LRCAP, just in case. Aerial recce finds n-1 enemy ships from yesterday, so that makes it (most likely) 3 American DDs sunk!

16 B-17s strike Rabaul, but this time there are lots of fighters, including Ki-45s, in the air, and 3 B-17s are confirmed as killed. Japanese losses to all reasons(gunners, ops, bombs, writeoffs) are 4 Zeros and 1 Ki-45. Every each of the B-17s is damaged, most multiple times, and Signal Corps says the Amis lost 2 more, at least, on their way home. They are so sure that 2 pilots from 24th Ku S-1 get their first kills "confirmed".  :)

Enemy naval traffic in the Coral Sea is increasing day by day. Kido Butai is now ready, but I decided to wait till the escorts are aso refit... Picket ships are ready to be deployed, now moved ahead to various little islands North East to the Solomons. 25 submarines in the area are also all ready, as are 10 big ones at Truk. They will sortie together with the Kido Butai, or a day before.

Everywhere else: not much happened, except that the 2 Chinese Corps that my opponent send to reinforce his Southern front are pretty much pinned down and nearly cut off.
