Wow, it's alive. I'm waiting anxiously the results of your Coral Sea operation.

July 2nd

My opponent confirms that he lost 9 bombers yesterday. They were apparently supposed to fly a night sortie, but it was canceled by bad weather, so they flew in the morning. I'll ask him maybe the crews didn't want to fly between the mountains at 8,000ft, a 900-mile NIGHT sortie against Japanese fortress with no blind-bombing devices or even radio navigation systems...

Quiet day, but it seems hes moving more air units to Rangoon, over 70 planes reported... I'm moving our G4Ms out to Saigon, and flying in our Army level bombers, they will hit Rangoon tomorrow, heavily escorted.

Light cruiser Kashima survived to Rabaul after all, and tomorrow, first AAA reinforcements from Manchuria arrive to Kavieng and Manus, while 4 new regiments, 2 of them with 100mm guns, arrive to Rabaul in 2 days.

Enemy CV fleet located: submarine I-7 gets attacked by an SBD dive bomber near Suva, just 40 miles from Fiji, barely 3 days sail at 15 knots from Solomon Islands. I'm going to wait until he reveals this force before revealing the position of the Kido Butai, unless a good opportunity to sink something important is present, or the enemy makes his next move...

Man, I wonder what he's doing. On one hand, I think he might be incompetent, seeing as how he wants to send bombers on a low altitude night sortie. On the other hand, I wonder if he's playing you and has a card up his sleeve that we don't know about.

Night bombing is a bit problematic in WitpAE, thats why. Theres the reduced AAA and nearly useless night fighters, but the bomb hits are not reduced as much, so against hard defended targets night bombing is more effective in the long run. Also bombers seem to always find air fields, unlike other targets, in the night.

I thought we had a rule against it(after I lost about 150 planes, to a single Wellington shot down by AAA, myself I have not flown a single night bombing sortie yet).

EDIT: even if hes well losing the attrition war(his bomber force has lost over 110 4-engine bombers, thats probably over 60% losses), he still holds Port Moresby, and has the supporting bases of Buna and Finchaven nearby. He also still holds half of New Britain, and can potentially start a land campaign against Lae. Guadalcanal and Tulagi are also his, so even if he is losing ships and aircraft at alarming rate, I will probably be unable to dislodge him from the Solomons or New Guinea.

Erkki, you seem to be DOMINATE. Your opponent.  :P

Unfortunately, the scenario also seems realisitic, i.e. even if the Japanese did much better than historically, they still get their arse kicked. You're still doing hellah well though!  :D

Well, they seem to be doing better with the casualty rate, but the expansion seems a bit limited. The Japanese haven't conquered Burma yet, and if I'm not wrong, the expansion in the SOPAC still seems less than historical, if I am recalling correctly.

I just realized you're up to July 1st. At the rate I'm going in Arsenal of Democracy, you might eventually catch me, which would be incredibly embarrassing. :P

It will be getting worse. I know he has had P-38s for last 2 months, but I'm yet to see one. My "educated guess" is that hes collecting them in a pool and giving P-38 units the best pilots he has. P-38 is and will be better than the A6M and Ki-43, even if its a PITA to maintain, with its 2 liquid cooled inline Allison engines. Sure I can outproduce them easily, even if its used together with other fighters such as P-40 and P-39, but it sure is going to drop my flyboy's K/D.

Carrier replacements the Allies wont be getting much before May 1943 other than 10-ish small CVEs(each carrying ~20 aircraft), but they will have lots of battleships and cruisers coming, and the last of the Pearl Harbor BBs will soon be replaced. Allied BB losses so far are 2 at Pearl (most probably Arizona and Tennessee) and the British Ramillies. Also 6 more were damaged at Pearl, as are Ramillies' sister ships Royal Sovereign and Revenge. Allies have also lost over 20 cruisers and nearly 50 destroyers, but those are just a drop in the sea...

Well, they seem to be doing better with the casualty rate, but the expansion seems a bit limited. The Japanese haven't conquered Burma yet, and if I'm not wrong, the expansion in the SOPAC still seems less than historical, if I am recalling correctly.

SOPAC expansion is historical minus Guadalcanal adventure. When it comes to land masses and islands conquered, the situation could be better, but at least we have seriously hurt the Allied Navy and kept their aerial losses very high, especially when compared to Japanese casualties.

Hmm....

Looks like I might need a new opponent. I cant yet declare a victory, but turn a week is not a good sign.

Anyone here up for a "round"?

I can play either side. It could be fun to write AARs simultaneously (and of course no spying!), or even 2 on 2 or 2 on 1. In 2 on 2 it would be possible to play 2-3 turns/day even if players have areas of responsibility, by leaving notes on what to do to ones companion. Of course when theres lots of action, everyone should check everything each turn. The inner politics (and confusion) could also end up in a lot of Fun...

Scenario 1, Scenario 2 (stronger Japan) or DaBabes mod, anyone?

Actually, at this rate or even turn/day I can easily play 2 games simultaneously.

1 on 1 (or 2 on 1, 2 on 2?), scenario 1, 2 or DaBabes.

I'm not the sort of player who likes to "game the game" or "game the opponent", I'm all open to discuss on the game, rules, or even retake a turn if it was a world-ender to the other side, at least if it was due some confusion or even a bug.

Some suggestions I'd have...

Air war:

a) nothing flies night missions except 4 or 2 engine bombers on CITY targets, and only when its moonlight, and only above 10,000ft

b ) either ceiling limit for all aviation, or a ceiling for bombers and fighters ceiling at the "critical altitude" of each model.

Last rule is to avoid stratosphere fights, and bombing(ie. drawing fighters in the air, even when they cant reach the bombers...).

Naval stuff:

c) no picket-spamming(dozens of sole xAKLs...) to divide CV sorties away from high-value targets. A picket is a picket, its supposed to give warning of enemy presence. A bait is a bait, something thats supposed to draw fire on itself.

d) no big planes (B6N, SB2C mostly) aboard CVEs other than CVE Ryujo. They were too small and short-decked for those aircraft to take off in full fuel and ordnance load.

e) no resizing CV air units to max size using CVs, and then operating them from land bases. The resize is for maximizing CV capacity use in the case one doesnt want fighters, torpedo bombers or dive bombers aboard one. Not for gaming the game.

And lastly..

f) no gaming the industry... thank you  :P

Anyone? More rule suggestions?

Well, I could attempt it.  I'm still not sure if that power outage during update messes anything up, though it plays fine, and of course I'm quite the newbie.  However, I played Coral Sea from start to finish as Allies and achieved pretty much the historical results, which I consider a personal success.

Maybe we could try that (I'd want to be allies again) and see how that goes, then maybe step it up.

Yeah, it looks like my opponent gave up. No turn for a week.

I already started a game, as Japan, against Smeulders... I can play 2 simultaneously, and might want to try playing the Allies.  ;)

Take your time considering it. I'm OK playing scenario 2 as well. And of course you have to write an AAR.  :)

I should be able to play at least 1,5 years, turn/day with max 4 day interruptions.

Yeah, I saw the other thread right after I posted that *facepalm*

I'd be willing to try playing as the Japanese, but keep in mind that while I'm a tech buff and a real nerd for all military vehicles/etc, I'm not that well versed with the Japanese planes/ships (as compared to Allied stuff which I've got down pretty well).  I've also debated which is a bigger logistical nightmare, supplying islands you have from the beginning, and thus dealing with a hodge podge of everything going every which way, or supplying islands you've captured yourself, and thus having your own organizational scheme from the start.

I'd lose, no doubts about it, but I always enjoy a good fight, even if I'm on the losing end.  I'd most definitely need the Japan boost if I play as them, though  :P

Japan has to go first, correct?  If so I may load it up after I get back from today's errands and see what I can do, and if it seems manageable even take a shot at it, lol.

Edit:  What's your position on auto-subs btw?
