Kinda like a giant, semi-real space-leech of size comparable to a F class star. Only instead of blood they drain any energy they find; from the star and the system surrounding it.

Makes sense, now. The things feed off fusionable matter, and the energy discharge from the fusion reaction (pretty much everything we know as heat, light and radio waves). The weapons were meant to cause them severe indigestion.

Dark matter (the real stuff) is what's not in stars; not glowing with light. Dark.
Hell, you could consider most of the Sol system as made up of dark matter. It's what's missing from the guesstimations of the Universe's mass and the guesstiamtion of the total mass of stars == what can be seen.
