Since when has DF been translated?

I was playing the Genesis mod the other day, and noticed something strange... Some names were displayed in both english and finnish, and rather well translated too. Has DF started to translate, or has somebody included finnish vocabulary to deon's Genesis for some obscure reason?:O

You mean that world name? I bet that someone bothered to translate some parts of df, but im running genesis and I never had the issue.

That's exactly what i mean. Why would someone translate DF partly to finnish, of all languages?:D

Why not Finnish? There are lots of hard core Finnish roguelike players.

According to google trends Finland searches for "dwarf fortress" more than any other country.

It's because of the Nords. World names and such take their names from the language files, and the Nord language file is based after, assumably, Finnish. I only recognized that it was Scandinavian of some variety, not a specific one. The Orcs, also, use a Chinese based language file, so you can get world names and such in chinese language.

Thank whoever put together the Nord language file.

That was indeed quite disturbing. In any other game, not so much, but in DF, i caught myself wondering if Toady made DF to recognize my system language and translate parts of names based on it...:)

It is kind of silly when you're scrolling last names for RNG goodness and you can read both the original and translated version... gives me the shivers.

Finnish isn't a scandinavian language. It's totally different. It is a nordic language, though, so the file name is nonetheless appropriate.

I was wondering that too, as finnish is in no way related to other scandinavian languages. Or most european languages, for that matter. German, swedish, english, and more are pretty close together, but closest relatives to Finnish are estonian, hungarian and bunchof marginal languages near ural mountains...:)

EDIT: ok, google translate says that it is indeed finnish.
I really feel sorry for them though, it's a pretty fucked up language :P

"Myyttikaikkeus" is pretty decent finnish translation for "The Mythical Universe".
