Now, a question. Should I have the ending of my NaPoWriMo fic be successful, in that Nightmare Moon is banished and Celestia returns, or unsuccessful, in that Nightmare Moon wins?

Take an alternative to both.

Maybe nobody wins. Maybe both sides reach a state of peace. Maybe the story never truly ends, both sides fighting until the end of time.

Try somewhere in the middle.

Maybe Nightmare Moon and her followers are able to find peace with a recently revived Celestia.

Maybe one or the other parties (or both) make the entire universe unsurvivable and nobody wins.

Maybe another deity comes along, kicks both their asses, and takes over for him- or herself.

Well, current possible endings available:

Followers of Celestia fight a siege defending Canterlot from besieging forces of NMM while protagonists recover EOH.

Or

Nightmare Moon is attacked by Celestia's followers, led by the protagonists.


Either has 6 possible endings.

HC: Celestia is brought back, NMM's followers are destroyed completely, new golden age.
AC: Celestia is brought back, but remains on the Golden Throne. NMM's followers escape, and NMM's body is never found.
DC: Celestia is brought back, battle has destroyed much of her followers. NMM's cultists have escaped, and NMM is not defeated permanently. Celestia is weakened, is being driven crazy by sheer suffering of the ponies.
DL: NMM wins. Just as evil as they thought. Widespread pillaging, mass murder, and other fun stuff fills the lands.
AL: NMM wins, but Celestia is retrieved. Stalemate.
HL: NMM wins, becomes Luna, is mad with guilt, tries to lead Equestria well, succeeds.

That's a nice selection.

Pick which one you like (or which seems to work out, you could try writing each and see which one comes out best if you have the time) and use that.
