I love Civ but I hate any and all forms of virtual social networking so much.

I have my doubts on Facebook games too. It's not that all of them suck, it's more of the "spam your friends or pay real money to do anything" gameplay model. If people moved from that, it'd be a lot better. This sounds more like a MMO browser game, so it sounds better.

Oddly, it required me to list my game-affiliation. I took that as a "Do you work in a game company y/n" question, but there wasn't a no option. So I just wrote none and it let me through.

I have so many mixed feelings on this I'm getting dizzy, but hell, why not. If it's no good I can always quit. I dislike Facebook on general principles, but since most of my family lives on the other side of the world and they all use Facebook, I would just be making my life more difficult for no practical reason if I refused to use it.

I've also signed up. I didn't figure out exactly how teams are going to be selected though. Is it just random chance + minimum group requirement?

Please carefully review the Alpha Tester Agreement and its confidentiality provisions. As this is a very limited development exercise, confidentiality is of utmost importance. You may not play in public places (e.g. airplanes, public libraries, internet cafes, etc), and may not discuss the game or your participation in this test with others. Screenshots, posts, comments, reviews or summaries, etc on blogs, websites, profile pages/walls, etc are not allowed. Please do not chat or send messages about the game outside the game itself. Any of these activities comprise a breach of your contractual obligations under the ALPHA TESTER AGREEMENT and will result in ejection from the Alpha testing.

Not that draconian. It is in alpha, and normally alpha (sometimes even beta) testers have some kind of confidentiality agreement.
